Re: BSA and QEII

Hi Paul

Is that a BSA?

Funny rear carrier and a damper knob on the left of the forks?

Re: BSA and QEII

Great photo, never seen it before. Could this be a C model BSA?

I have never seen Wilhelmina, Juliana or Beatrix on a motorcycle.

Re: BSA and QEII

Lex beat me too it. It's a Model D 250SV. Quite a few of these were impressed and used by the ATS.

I'm chuffed to see that picture though. I've also got pictures of Lillibet working on a Tilly like mine.

Here is my WD/D. Ron

Here are a couple more pictures of Model D's with the ATS that Jan sent me.

And here is Lillibet again at that ATS training centre. I think she was only there during 1945.

Re: BSA and QEII

Nice picture, thanks for sharing!

But... Are we sure that this is really QEII ? This picture was published in 1942, but there is no mention of who's riding this motorcycle...

"Not BSA and QEII"

Very good point Jan, I have been wondering that myself and surely it would have said if it was.

Paul did this appear on your BSA yahoo group around the first of April?

Re: "Not BSA and QEII"

1942? Ah well in that case it's not her! She would have been only 16 and not eligible for duty...not even for propaganda.

I always thought she served with the ATS in 1945 only.

Re: "Not BSA and QEII"

to be honest i think she looked a bit old for that time but refrained from making the comment.... i think that lillibet looked like that in the 60s

Re: "Not BSA and QEII"

Oh dear! Just had a look at the Yahoo group thread, and found this:

As a homage to HM Queen Elizabeth II in her Jubilee year, I invite the motorcyclists amongst you to see another side of the Queen, doing her motorcycle test as HRH Princess Elizabeth with the ATS as a teenager during WW2. I saw this photo in a wartime motorcycle magazine amongst a load I bought in a junk shop and spent ages tracking down the archive. It was published again in the men's magazine Vogue Hommes International in 1998 and the Palace was most grateful to be in touch with the archivist who helped me find the original negatives as HM had no copies. We were told that she was very pleased to be able to show the picture to her grandchildren. The bike is a 250cc sidevalve BSA C10.

Errare humanum est...
