Is this still the way to install the valve guides?
Depth for the inlet is 1 1/8" = 28,6 mm and 15/16" = 23,8 mm for the exhaust.
Do you need to heat the barrel, or can you have a go with a hammer....? I have the .350" punch.
Any practical tips appreciated
I installed NOS guides by oiling them and gently hit them in,
But with a soft metal between the two, and of course – the barrel should be clean where the guide goes.
However, one should be careful, a the guides metal is fragile
And easily crack and break if hit directly or pressed hard with pliers.
The length of the 2 guides is not the same, but I have seen many barrels with 2 inlet or 2 outlet guides installed,
Just like the tappets are not the same, yet usually people use it as the same.
Noam is correct about the valve guide lengths...the easy way to tell them apart (if you have a matched pair) is that the exhaust guide is counter drilled to a larger diameter than the valve stem at one end. The counter drilled end should be fitted uppermost...Ian
Just check they are tapered correctly, yes, the whole length is tapered, I've had quite a few sets that were made parallel along their length so they just pushed all the way through.
