Re: what do you guys use to compress valve springs?
Hi Kevin,
I use the Terry’s tool, (Sorry, not for sale.. )
But there are other tools you can find, of other makers, and are more common.
I found a German made one in an old hardware store which works great.
You can also make one out of (carpentry) clamp by making a kind of fork to compress the spring,
And the other, screw part compressing the valve, above, or taking a small vice, or something of the kind,
Weld 2 tongue into it, (Again, one should be fork-like) and place it in the adjusting window.
When you open the vice, it would compress the spring with the top tongue,
while the other is pressing against the bottom of the window.
In this case the valve might rise out, but as nothing it compressing it, you can just press it back with a finger.

Sorry, I notice now that you did also have the clamp idea..

I have an old British one that works fine on them, but it's not the small Terry type (the small Terry type one didn't work on the last M20 I tried to use it on as the collets were so stuck in the top valve cap that even a good tap wouldn't free them) you can have it for £5 plus the postage if you want it.
