A good mate of mine is trying to find out a little about his Grandfathers travels during his Army days in 1941, it turns out that Monty asked for a geographical surveyof all rivers and canals in the south of England for the suitability of using Bailey bridges, my freinds Grandfather was handy with surveying ground and was also had a motorcycle to ride about on doing these surveys.
The report was done and given to Monty, a letter of thanks given. I would have guessed that it was likely that an M20 was used, mines a 41 and will take it down to show off when the weathers a bit warmer and the bike is running. BUT would anyone happen to know anything about Southern Command in 1941, where the HQ was etc etc. feel free to email me.
Ive suggested National Army Museum first, get his service number etc..Thanks
Hi Kit..Southern Commands HQ was at Tidworth in Wiltshire..Interestingly two of the units that came under its command..at least in 1939..were the 1st. and 2nd. Survey Regiments Royal Artillery....Ian
