handle bar grips

Can any one tell me when rubber grips on handle bars replaced canvas ones.?

It's the other way round. Due to rubber shortages caused by Japanese conquests in the Far East, canvas replaced rubber on new machines, probably from late 1942 onwards. Existing rubber grips remained in use and there would also have been spares in the system for some time.

thanks Rik, so on a 1945 bike are rubber grips ok or not & if so what design ?

By 1945 you would have been well and truly into canvas grips. Unless your bike was an early model and still retained it's original rubber. Ron
