I want to make my own canvas grip and i want to ask if the grips originally have the same external (outer)size for the left and the right end for the handlebar? If any of you have a close photo of original war time canvas grip ( left and right) will be a great help for me. Also original dimensions will be helpful.
thank you all
Hello Petros.
Here is an original grip. For 7/8" bars (M20) the right side grip is 1" inside diameter to go over the twist grip. The other end is 7/8" ID. The standard length seems to be about 5". Although this one has shrunk back a bit with age. It will probably pull out to length when fitted though. Longer variations were made for Ariel's and others.
The end ferrules are 1/4". These are brass but later they were made from (cheaper) steel.
The material from a standard webbing pouch or back pack is ideal.
Hope this helps. Ron
Ron
thank you for your help and photo
Finally there is difference between the left side and the right side canvas grip. The outer dimensions are different also? or they use some trick ( double layer of canvas to the left ) to bring both grip in the same outer dimensions?
I have removed this one from a damaged handlebar I had. Unfortunately it doesn't fit the repro handlebars as the original has been made from a lot thicker tube.
Thanks Lex..That works out at a wall thickness of .172" as measured. The SWG chart for tube thickness shows 7 gauge as .176"...so I reckon that's what it is...Ian
