What is left of my wiring harness is a tattered mess of random brown wires. Broken, cut and frayed, and beyond salvation. And not original anyway. :(
So I need a total rewire. My options seem to be :
1.Make up a wiring harness
2. Buy one
3. Run in total darkness and yell at the top of my lungs when I need a horn.
Since option 1 is the cheapest I may go that route, but I'd need to know what the original finish should be- cloth wrapped? There seems to be a canvas-like sleeve at the steering neck on mine, not sure if it's the remains of the original harness, but the wires are all wrong.
Or if somebody could point me in the direction of a good supplier of original pattern wiring harness (with provision for hi/lo beam headlight) it would save me the pain of trying to make one up.
Cheers, Vince
I would say have a go yourself Vincent. No British motorcycle up to and including the 1970s is that complicated but the straightforward dynamo / CVC system is as easy as they get (no ignition system to worry about).
The only fiddly part is the wiring of the main headlamp switch.
Making it yourself should be a pleasure rather than a pain and once you've done it, troubleshooting the charging / lighting system will be simple.
The bike itself is the best jig that you can have - you know that it fits then.
The original WD wiring systems were black rubber rather than cloth and this can be replicated by scouring pvc cable with 'ScotchBrite'. A small diameter cycle inner tube makes an ideal protective sleeve around the headstock and looks as original.
You will simply need to use the pre / early war wiring diagram to incluse dipping and the brake light has no complicated wiring.
