valve timing, sorry not M20 but still BSA single!

I used to know this, but then again I also used to know what I just got up and went into the kitchen for, whereas these days I simply stand there looking at the cooker wondering why the hell I am …what was I saying?
Anyway, valve timing, what is the tappet clearance when checking valve timing? I seem to remember 18 thou but I don’t seem to have made a note of this anywhere and it could have been for a Trumpet twin anyway.
I have found a couple of 65-2450 exhaust cams and as the lift and duration is the same as the corresponding inlet cam and 25° longer than standard I’m going to be a cheapskate and try and experiment with using one as an inlet in the B31 and see how close I can get to the GS inlet timing.
The engine at the moment is bog standad B31 but with an 18 tooth sprocket and although it will buzz along happily at 60mph it all seems a bit hectic for my liking so I‘d like to experiment with the cams and maybe a tooth more. I don’t really have the skill or facilities to play around with bigger valves etc. although if anyone has a low comp T140 piston going cheap I would be interested.
Any advice on opening/overlap greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Pete

Re: valve timing, sorry not M20 but still BSA single!

Hi Pete,

I tried to lookup the data for you, did some goggling,
And as far as I could find in this site

http://www.stevenott.com/BSA.htm

And in this manual

http://www.stevenott.com/eddie.pdf

Valve clearance should be 0.018".

Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Noam
