Dynamo

Once again; dynamo repolarisation.
I have an electronic regulator with positive earth on the battery. The connecting of the wires inside the dynamo had to be changed, according to the manual of the electronic regulator. I did that.
The question is; Is the procedure for repolarisation still the same as described in the technical information pages on this web-site ? Or not ?
Is there any specialist who can tell in plain English ?

Re: Dynamo

Connect every thing the way you want it, ie battery positive earth, take the field wire that comes from the dynamo and flash this against the live terminal of the battery in the case of a poitive earth battery then you flash aginst the negative terminal.I don't know why you had to change wires inside the dynamo, normaly you only do this when you are changing the direction of rotation of the dynamo.

Re: Dynamo

I believe you have to alter the internal wiring with a JG unit (manufactured by Dave Lindsley)..is that what you have?
The best thing would be to contact the supplier with any technical queries..they should be familiar with the product.
One over riding feature with all electronic units is that the polarisation is correct so don't put any current through the unit until you are sure you have it right. Also check that the basic wiring system is functioning correctly before connecting up the regulator...Ian

Re: Dynamo

Working strictly from logic and not from experience, once you've changed the dynamo wiring you're done. If you also change the polarization of the magnets you would have essentially undone the changing of the wiring. Perhaps the safest way to determine it is, once you've changed the wiring, without connecting any other part of the electrical system, hook up the dynamo wiring to a multimeter and see which side of the dynamo connection is negative and which is positive. If the dynamo is mechanically connected to the engine, you can do this by running the engine. If not, you can do it by spinning the dynamo by hand, with appropriate assists, such as a nut driven by a socket wrench. Although this latter method will provide you with a lot less voltage, the positive/negative will be the same as long as you make sure you spin it the same direction as it would spin when it's on the engine.

Re: Dynamo

That makes sense John..The JG unit (if that is what we are discussing) was probably the first such regulator and may differ from later types.
I had one years ago..and that means I can't recall the details! ....Ian

Re: Dynamo

I have fitted different types of electronic regs and none have said you have to alter the dynamo wiring, if this is an old one it will not function as well as some of the newer ones such as Manortec which have better quality parts that are moe sensitive to the batteries requirements.

Re: Dynamo

I'm guessing that although the alteration to the internal wiring is still required later versions of the JG have been updated in other respects. It's hard to imagine he has produced it in a completely unaltered form for 20 years or more when things have moved on...Ian
