It might be obvious to everyone else, but I've no idea what the "broad arrow" is that I see on this site and elsewhere. Is it a general military logo/device, or something more exclusive to DRs? Any info welcome.
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
Thanks, Hans.
I wonder if this is the origin of the BSA "piled arms" device - a nod towards the broad arrow logo. Is that something obvious that I've overlooked all these years? Or is there another explanation?
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
I understand you find broad arrows stamped on the copper rivets that hold HMS Victory together, wasn't it originally called "The Kings Mark". The BSA piled arms logo only looks similar when its a very small stamp, I don't think there's a connection. Rob.
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
Hi Danny, the piled arms logo represents how soldiers used to stack their rifles rather than just laying them on the ground when resting.
Cheers, Mick.
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
Thanks Rob and Mick. I understood about piling rifles together in the military tradition. I just wondered whether someone at BSA was feeling clever and realised that the piled arms was similar to the broad arrow and used that device as some kind of marketing ploy. As Rob says, there's probably no connection. It was just a thought.
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
BSA stands for British Small Arms as they were rifle makers before making motorcycles and bikes i think they still made rifles and machine guns during WW2 and did during WW1
Re: Can anyone explain the "broad arrow", please? - BSA piled arms?
Thanks, Roger. But BSA is actually Birmingham Small Arms, not British Small Arms. The firm was a group of gunsmiths in the Birmingham area. As I understand it, bikes and motorcycles were originally built largely to keep the factories running when the shooting stopped. Something like that.

Royal Enfield...'built like a gun' (always going BANG)..
Triumph...all 'Try' and no 'umph..'
