modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

Hi all, I just ran cross this:

http://www.modernmotorcyclemechanics.com/

and the ads say that people restoring old bikes love this book. Can anyone tell me how applicable it is to M20's?

Whether it is in this book or not, I am looking for tolerances for parts. Right now I am rebuilding a wartime gearbox, and there are several pieces that look fine, but I'd really like to know the wear tolerances before I use or discard them... and no manual I have bought provides them.

I looked for used copies of the book, but they're more expensive than new! I guess that means it's a sound investment...

Hi Nick...Because it's expensive and hard to find doesn't necessarily mean it is really good...ask any Douglas Dragonfly owner .
I should think it is a good book for general work and repair...rather like 'The Vintage Motorcycle Workshop'...another very informative book.
However, it is unlikely to contain the degree of detail you require for exactly that reason, its scope is probably too wide.
As you have found, even BSA publications covering only the M20 do not go into such depth.
The only publication that will meet your requirements is the M20 Standards book and as far as I am aware that is not currently in print or generally available.
I have two versions of this book and I can see that a limited run of copies is required...you are not the first to have needed information found only within that publication.
Unfortunately I don't have the facilities to copy it in quantity or to put it onto a disc so will have to find someone to do it locally.
In the short term I can probably answer your questions relating to the gearbox specs. if you e mail me direct....Ian

Re: modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

I too would love to get my hands on such information If you do manage to get your copies scanned etc. Ian I would be up for a copy. I could do it for you no problem except that I'm not local (Germany), although the offer stands if you trust such valuable literature to the postal system!
Cheers
Pete

Re: modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

On the Nicholson book, the first edition, is the one full of WD motorcycle info. The paper of the pages however, is so thin that it is difficult not to tear it.

Of all of the editions, that is the best one to get, in my opinion.

Re: modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

I may have somewhere to have the standards book put onto disc. Not sure of the cost yet but I will post it as soon as I have a figure....Ian

Re: modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

Ian
I'm sure there are plenty of us who would pay for a paper or CD copy of this standards book.
We know you have a living to make and we are prepared to pay a commercial price.

Re: modern motorcycle mechanics book, any good?

I'm having a run of both 'paper' and disc copies done. I will be using my original 1951 copy of the standards book, not the 1954 version that I got in copy form from Steve Madden. I think he may have copyright on the copies he made of his own original....I'll put up a posting when they are ready with details of prices etc....Ian
