Recently I obtained a really nice original BSA M20 instruction book for contract no C5610
WM20 14,001 to WM20 18,000 with a stamp date of 10 June 1943

Its in good condition and has illustrations for early models, valanced guard, large headlight etc.

Inside it has details as follows
D Section, 7th Cmd Sigs, G.P.O, Mertsham , Surrey

SGMN Church EJ 6412368
BSA 4197169

Would anyone have a swap for a similar original book suitable for my own bike WM20 107738 - I think the contract is S5209 ?

Not really interested in selling, just to swop

John, any chance of posting a scan of the page with the personal details on ? I'd be interested to see it and perhaps try to research further.

A quick check shows that he isn't on the CWGC listings so should have survived the war.

I have quite a few with personal details in them if you want I can send you these too.

Merstham is just down the road from where I used to live and coincidentally my Dad was Royal Signals and did a stint at Redhill, billeted at Merstham during 1943 / 1944. A good excuse to ask him some questions.

Hi John, I'm not sure there was a handbook for S5209, by this time the "Drivers Handbook" "Book No.100/BC2 Air Publication 1657B, Vol 1 Part 1" had become the standard handbook. but I could be wrong.

I guess the blue one is slightly earlier it says BC2A, the yellow one is BC2C?

Its the standard small size for the tool box.

The blue book above has this April 1943 slip glued in the front.


Here is another which was clearly used for a bike from contract S1048



The Yellow book above appears to be dated 1952.



And here is what I believe to be an Army Reprint which dates from even later.



The last handbook with an actual contract number which I have is contract C11101



Here is another which has been altered for C12424.



Does any one has an original handbook with a contract after C11101?

I have one for contract C6126 which is marked 'instruction book', also has the oil conversion chart glued inside and has engine and frame nos. on the front cover...Ian

engine and frame # WM20-18001 to WM20 21000 has lubrication chart stuck inside the front cover written in ink acrossed the top of the front page is an army # 45566791 no name
