hi,i need to hone a couple of thou out of my matchless g3 cylinder bore,i have a new 3 bladed type hone to use and internal micrometrs etc but have never used a hone befor so does any one have any tips please.
Hi Adrian...These types of hones are 'self centering' but try to keep your drill in line with the center of the bore. Run the hone at a moderate speed and apply plenty of oil to the bore and the stones of the honing tool.
Take care to keep the pivot point of the stones well inside the bore, allowing just the ends to protrude from the bore at the top and bottom of the 'stroke'.
This will help to produce a more parallel bore.
Check the dimension frequently...with new stones material removal can occur deceptively quickly...Ian
Is it a spring type hone, or one that you screw out to fit the bore? The spring ones don't really remove the material, but the advice is the same as Ians, use it slowly (120RPM ) and move it up and down at the same time, you are aiming for about 60 degee angle on the honing marks or 120 degrees, depending on which angle you measure! It is better to use paraffin as it is cheaper than special honing oil and does the same job, which is to stop the stones from clogging up, as oil dosen't really do this. When you've done, wash it off as best as you can, then use a clean rag with engine oil on it and keep wiping the bore until the rag stays clean, if you just wash it off you may still find there are bits of grit on it and by using the clean rag you can see when it is truly clean.
The flex hones are pretty good, but the main problem with them and the spring loaded ones is that they are no good at removing the ridge at the top of a previously used cylinder, but they are one of the best cheaper types
