Keighley Show

My wife has just suggested that we visit one of the agricultural shows in the Dales and it brought back memories of the Keighley Show. As a small child I loved going to the show and seeing the massive pigs that seemed to be the size of hippos, and the huge sheep with their wool clipped so that they looked almost square. They appeared to be completely different species from the pigs and sheep that we were accustomed to seeing in the hills around Keighley. The show was a great day out. Is it still held, or has it gone the way of much of Keighley life of the 1950s?

Re: Keighley Show

Google has enabled me to answer my own question -
"Keighley Show - Saturday, 6th September 2008
The Keighley Show is arranged for Saturday 6th September in the King George V Playing Fields, Marley, Keighley."
Mt recollections of the show are of it taking place in Victoria Park though.

Re: Keighley Show

Keighley may well be in Airedale but it is not really "in the Dales"(note the quotation marks); not if you accept that Skipton is 'The Gateway to the Dales'.

Re: Keighley Show

A fruitless topic Alan and Brian since, if you check the original posting, I never said Keighley was "in the Dales". Now, if there are any tales of Keighley Show ....

Re: Keighley Show

Is the Worth valley classed as one of the Dales? Are the Dales a zone - and if so what are their boundaries? What is a Dale and what are the basic qualifications for recognition on this site? by such discerning critics? Or is a Dale what is already named and recorded as such - and therefore a non-inclusive valley doesn't stand a chance to be included. Where stands Cobbeydale? And who cares except programme producers for Radio4 and BBC2? That just leaves posters and readers of kbgs.com

Re: Keighley Show

Keighley Show has been cancelled.

The annual extravaganza was due to be held this Saturday 6 Sept.2008

But the heavy rain of recent weeks has left the showground sodden.

And bosses decided this morning, after a meeting at the Marley King George V playing fields venue, that the event couldn't go ahead

Re: Keighley Show

Is the Keighley Show what used to be the annual Gala Day in the war years with a Big Parade through the streets , North Street, Cavendish Street and Lawkholme Lane, ending up at Victoria Park. There was then a sports afternoon and a fairground and after the removal of the blackout restrictions in 1945, a fireworks display.

Re: Keighley Show

No the Keighley Show was not the Gala Day, it was originally also held in Victoria Park around the first week in September. There were competitive classes for the usual things, livestock, small animals/pets, flowers fruit and veg, WI type things, and even a show jumping arena (Harvey Smith was there early in his career). Trade stands of course as well.
