"Ermysted's Grammar School pupil Mark Parker is off to the United States after winning a $200,000 scholarship to Harvard University.
The maths prodigy, who is taking A Levels in maths, further maths, Latin, chemistry and general studies, has become the first pupil at the Skipton school to be offered a place at the internationally renowned university." cravenherald.co.uk
Skipton is in North Yorkshire, Chris. They are are of the areas (about 15-20% of England) that retained selection at 11+. Local Authorities were given the choice and a minority chose to stick with what they had.
My granddaughter recently received her scores in the 11+. Out of a possible 560, she scored 499; out of 4000 applicants she finished in the top 180 (that's as detailed as they get. Anyway - she scored 125/140 for maths, 125/140 for verbal reasoning, 116/140 for non-verbal reasoning, and 133/140 for English. She was offered entry into 2 grammar schools.
Years at KBGS e.g. 1958-1964 (optional) 1958-61

Possibly - but it doesn't show what the alternatives have achieved - comps or public. I think it shows what an able student can do in a supportive environment.
I also live in a continuing grammar school area in East Kent. The children get the sort of start that Ermystead etc affords and without the need to look at independent schools. The tragedy is that KBGS was a beacon of excellence and pride in an otherwise grimy mill town. The thought of those stylish green and white blazers standing out in chavish Keighley now brings a smile to face.
