Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

October 5th - Alan Britten's sixtieth birthday. Have a happy one, Alan! How do I know this?? For some reason it's a bit of utterly useless information I've been carrying around in my mental files and folders for about fifty years. I reckoned if I used it, I might forget it, then that'd be one more bit of info to replace with something else within the ever diminishing bank of shrivelling brain cells. So come on, folks - which useless info do you want to use and lose?? Post it here and rebuild your brain capacity!

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

Happy birthday one and all. Pathetic, but I hadn't realised that our year will all be the big six-0 this year. Don't time fly? Mine's not till the end of July, I was always young for my age!

..I, like you, Brian (M), am a fish...

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

Allan. Heaven knows how you remembered it. Yes, although I try not to think about it, 60. It's been a long road. I'm sure when we were at school we'd work out how old we'd be by the year 2000. Hey presto, in the blink of an eye, here we are in 2006. Weird stuff. At least Dylan is,er,65 or something. Perhaps a poem for the occasion :

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.
The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks.

The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman's lime.

The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.

And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

Cheers everyone. 60.....jeeze I can't find my knees.

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

I passed the big six-oh myself on 13th Jan, so
have taken the plunge and sent Chris my "Then & Now" mug-shots. Expect to retire this summer.

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

Alan - your final comment reminds me of the bloke who woke up in hospital after a car accident:

'Nurse, nurse, I can't feel my legs!!!'
'No dear, you won't, we've amputated your arms'

Sick, sick!

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

I wonder how the subjects of "Now and Then" looked at a midway point - say 30-35.

Only 60 ? You lucky feller, hardly old enough to be called an old boy yet ! I was finishing school the year you were born !

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

I'll be finishing only this year!
I ran away the first day my Mum took me to nursery school, when she made the mistake of letting go my hand. Why I didn't keep on running is one of life's unfathomable mysteries.

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

I just celebrated my 6 0 on Saturday, 10th March. When I was making my speech I suddenly realised that I sounded exactly like that Monty Python sketch, "Eee, when I was a lad we dreamed of....."

I guess that there must be a lot of official grumpy old farts now rather than just pretenders to the title.

Hope you all either had or are looking forward to a good one

Re: Happy sixtieth birthday a.b. !

It was mine on Tuesday 13th. Your words were spot on, the card I received from my work colleagues (beside being one of those horrendous musical ones that plays 'Congratulations') clearly stated that I wa snow qualified as an 'Old Fart' club member.

I just had another look at the then and now photo section, I see Brian Craven is still hanging around with old boilers!

They're still all that's available to me, but don't tell the Missus!
