Nudes

Following on from other entries in other threads re nudes posing in the art room. Does anyone remember those small A5 size magazines that were stocked at Milburns shop, just across from school at the corner of Cavendish St and Lawkholme Lane ? They were naturist things I think (rather than soft porn) 'Spick and Span' I recall they were called.
Occasionally some lad 'obtained' a copy from time to time, and they got passed round the class, with considerable interest from many of us.

Re: Nudes

This must have been a poor relation of 'Health and Efficiency' which was the main naturist magazine of the time and was similarly thumbed over but contained nothing more exciting than long shots of rather buxom naked ladies playing tennis, usually slightly out of focus.

Re: Nudes

I certainly recall these being sold at Millburns although I never had the bottle to go and buy one - weren't they about 2/- or maybe 2/6? 'Spick & Span' was definitely one title but there were numerous others - some in colour - all are apparently now collectors items. They were a step up from the routine Health & Efficiency publications and did have close ups essentially upper torso rather than nether extremities.
I do have a 'sample' of this genre but won't submit this for site entry! Back in 2B and 3C I recall one of our lads (Geoffrey "mouse" Baldwin) buying more than one of these artistic booklets which were well thumbed in a matter of days.
All I could manage to do was buy a 6d copy of either Reveille or TitBits...!

Re: Nudes

I realise now that 'Spick and Span' was probably ahead of 'Health and Efficiency' which I can only remember being in black and white. I can remember first seeing it in about 1941.It existed until fairly recently--it may still exist; I must do some research on the Internet!

Re: Nudes

My goodness! It does still exist (Health and Efficiency' I mean) and on the web as well. A Google search will take you to the correct URL.A similar Google search on 'Spick and Span' leads you to some so-called nostalgia-glamour sites including, I think, a link to Spick and Span. So there you go all you Betty Grable fanciers!

Re: Nudes

On the same lines but moving out, what was the name of the theatre where the bus station now is? I recall going to see Phylis Dixey there. She was a fan dancer who had to place her fans carefully so as not to show too much but enough to cause great excitement to 14(?) year olds!

Re: Nudes

The Hippodrome.

Re: Nudes

Wasn't The Hippodrome where the Keighley Amateurs used to do Oklahoma and Kiss Me Kate and Brigadoon etc. in those wonderful days before the dreaded Andrew LLoyd-Webber.

Re: Nudes

Ah yes, The Hippodrome!! In later years it was named 'The Queen's Theatre' and my mother, God bless her, used to run the Circle Bar there until the theatre closed down, making way for town centre development. My mother it was, who found me the job as 'Call-boy'(not to be confused with the term 'call-girl')with Keighley Amateurs in the late 40s and early 50s, and what great fun that was for a young, 14-16 year old lad, nipping in and out of the ladies' dressing rooms every evening for a week, and twice on Saturday!!Oh Happy Days! I can still recall the songs from 'Wild Violets','Maid of the Mountains','NO!No!Nanette' and 'The Gondoliers'; and all this before having to do National Service in the R.A.F.in 1952. When I completed my time in the forces and returned home, the theatre had been demolished!! All their productions are now presented at Victoria Hall, the old Manor House and Museum, in Victoria Park.
