I think "Fred's" wasa what my dad used to call "the sellin' out shop" - i.e. Off licence

That's right Shaun.

Do you remember, was it ? Holmes [in your year], whose parents had the 'selling-out shop' down Oakworth Road?

Didn't 'Fred' start his ice-cream business in the 1920's in the building that was eventually taken over by 'Ledas' opposite the Alice Street gate before he moved up Fell Lane?

Yes! It was Peter Holmes.... but I can't confirm your information regarding the ice-cream parlour.
