Re: Re: School Clinic/Dentist

In answer to your question Brian the outfitters was Pearcey's and at least one of the Pearcey lads was at KBGS during our time. It was one of the registered suppliers of school uniform for schools in Keighley including KBGS. Regarding Milburn's paper shop - I can still conjur-up the smell of the newsprint. It also used to sell 'dirty' magazines though in those days (the late 50s and early 60s)they were in black and white with the naughty parts blanked out. Hardly pornography as we've come to know it but copies were occasionally passed from hand to hand around the playground.

Re: School Clinic/Dentist

Another notorious dentist up Devonshire street was called Tomlinson. He was in fact our family dentist where my parents went, but I was always sent to E S Midgley at the clinic. Im not sure which would have been worse.

Re: School Clinic/Dentist

There was also a Mr Clay - a much less vigorous dental practitioner. I always hoped I got him. Also at the Clinic in I think 1953, there was offered mass vaccination against the smallpox outbreak that was particularly telling in Shipley and Baildon. The queues were down Spring Gardens Lane. If you had a reaction you were excused showers after PT. My upper arm swelled up and there was a quite sore scab formed. I remember seeing one young woman pull up her skirt and show more female leg than I had ever seen before to have the prick on her upper leg (I think they called them thighs) - to avoid the possibility of an unsightly scar on her upper arm - no doubt to avoid embarrassment when she was playing tennis. She was one of Miss Evans' bigger girls.
