The story goes (according to Gilbert Swift when addressing smoking foragers at Kirkcudbright camp)that Old Nick was a smoker - but never smoked until late afternoon when school was over and he could not be observed doing so by the pupils (of the pupils!!)He observed this practice (of self-discipline) even during school holidays when the gaze of pupils was anywhere but on Old Nick.

Don’t recall the prefects’ room but the atmosphere in the staff room, even though only glimpsed from the doorway, surely rivalled the smogs in London that we used to see on TV in those days.
