Re: Shipley Glen

I have very vague memories of being taken on a ‘trip’ to Shirley Glen. It must have been a Sunday School treat. Train from Kildwick to Shipley, then a short walk to another railway, a bit like a Swiss Mountain railway but not as long or anything like as steep. As I said, my memories are vague. I don’t remember anything specific about the place but there again, I can’t have bee much more than six years old.

Re: Shipley Glen

The glen railway was cable hauled, with open, wooden carriages festooned with coloured pennants. There were indeed swing boats at the top, some slot machines and a cafe. It was an exciting afternoon out. I was there a few years ago. Everything was closed, but there were signs up about a community initiative to revive the place. Wonder if that happened?

Re: Shipley Glen

Vague memories of being taken there in the police car by Dad . Official business . My brother and I hidden in the back seat under police cape which they had then . This was in about 1942 when the Glen was in use as a practice ground for tanks so Dad took us along to watch as they tore about . Top stuff for us lads then . The light rail was shut down for the duration .

Re: Shipley Glen

Wasn't Shipley Glen in vogue when Belle Vue flourished? Another day out but I've no recollection of Belle Vue at all and that was my first bump into French sans knowing it. Another attraction was Hollingworth Lake which then reminds me of Ogden Water; another circular walk.
