Re: KBGS website.

Very strange. It had become unavailable for me but has been OK since Sunday 12th.

Re: KBGS website.

More peculiar problems here. I can now get into the main part of the website but once I go to the forum I can't get out of it again. I think I'll put Hotel California on for a listen.

Re: KBGS website.

Nothing seems to have been done yet to sort it out , its a fortnight since anyone posted and the the main part of the group seems to be inaccessible.

Has it been hacked?

Can anyone email Chris to see if it has?

Re: KBGS website.

I emailed Chris a few days ago, but no reply...

Re: KBGS website.

The problem is that quite inadvertently Chris let the contract for the Photo archive lapse when it was due for renewal. It is apparently quite a separate provider from the rest of the site. However, Chris has most of the photographs on his own computer and I have arranged for him to forward them to David Kirkley of the Keighley Schools' Archive as a temporary but secure home in the meantime. Chris himself is much occupied, at the moment, with personal things, and has no time to deal with these problems, so the transfer will not happen overnight. I am still hopeful that we shall be able to restore the whole site, I have the contact details should anyone wish to volunteer to undertake the negotiations. I'm afraid I am too busy to do so, but in any case, I think it needs someone who is good deal more computer-savvy than I am. Anyone willing to do this?

Re: KBGS website.

This site has been circling the drain for some time and is currently on its way into the eternal darkness.

Since it was not able to be maintained or supported and has now collapsed, there is no point considering reanimating it in anything like its old form. Who will maintain it? Who will use it apart from the dozen or so dependables?

The Grim Reaper's suggestion is that you establish a social media page (facebook, instagram etc.) and use this to run the messaging service between an ever diminishing group of people.

Anyone can set this up - you don't need to be a techie. Once the photos are retrieved (presumably in digital form) they can be added to the new site at will.

You will need to inform the troops about the new arrangements.

The forum still seems to be alive (for now). You will have to decide whether your words of wisdom over the decades are worth preserving and how to retrieve them.

That's it

But don't hang around doing it.

All the best

Re: KBGS website.

So that's it then . All the memories and photos of the old school gone for good . Of course when we are gone no one will be much interested anyway . What a pity . This is the second time this has happened to me as a village site which had attracted a huge amount of details of the history of the village, including old historic photos not seen before, suddenly disappeared with the loss of all it contained .
Is it at all possible to retrieve all the information from the internet , print it out and possibly have it published by a small publisher, there are a lot of firms around who would do this if the material was available .
As this is way out of my league , my internet experience is very limited , I ask if anyone knows whether this can be done . As for the cost well we can have a look at that when we see if it is possible . I would be happy to make a substantial contribution if it looks feasible .

Re: KBGS website.

Shoot the messenger.

If that is the best someone can come up with in the space of four weeks on the subject of the dying state of this website then the thesis is proved: let it expire.

In those four weeks no one at all has picked up on my helpful suggestions for saving some bits of the site. The two contributions so far have been completely unhelpful:

- 'Mike Nichols' displays total incomprehension of the issue, wanting 'someone' to go into publishing.

- 'Peter Lancaster' aggressively poses an irrelevant question involving 'are allowed', in effect attacking the donkeys who have carried the load of this website down the years. He should have used a pseudonym: 'Outraged, Brighouse'.

Apropos anonymity: The 'Grim Reaper' has as little idea of who 'Peter Lancaster' really is as Lancaster has of who the Grim Reaper really is.

Just typing in '1953-58' and 'Brighouse' - well anyone, even GR, could do that. The GR plays the ideas, not the man.

Why not address the subject of the thread [the persistence of this website and its assets] instead of fussing about irrelevancies?

All the best

Who is this "Grim Reaper"? Why hide your identity ? No one has done this before and I find it insulting to the rest of us

Re: KBGS website.

If you put to one side how GR makes his points, they are nonetheless pertinent and worthy. It’s about saving the site and its contents. I have emailed the hosting company Bravenet, but it looks like their own website isn’t functioning properly, so I’m not really expecting a reply. If Chris or Bravenet (or both) would be prepared to transfer admin functions to me, I’d be happy to continue hosting, preferably with others, so that the whole enterprise would not depend on the availability of a single person. I wonder if Keighley Public Library or some other Keighley-based history group would consider being a part of this? I also think GR’s idea of transferring content to a Facebook group makes sense if Bravenet are inflexible about creating more admins.

Re: KBGS website.

A worthy suggestion and worth a try. Help would be forthcoming from me, anyway.

Re: KBGS website.

Allan Jones is sort of on the right track, but is still misunderstanding the situation.

Here are some supplementary thoughts that might be useful:

1- Bravenet is the (freebie) host of this messaging board, no more.

2- The core site is kbgs.com. You now have to act fast to preserve this. It was first registered on 2001-02-23.

The registration EXPIRED on 2020-02-23 and it is currently in the 'redemptionPeriod' (30 + 5 days). Unless someone (the hosting company) does something very soon the domain kbgs.com will expire. This means that the name then becomes available for anyone else in the world to register as their own.

3- There is currently no website 'attached' this domain, presumably because the hosting company was not paid, threw your data away and allowed the domain name to lapse.

4- If I remember correctly, there was a very clunky photo-album app embedded in the website. You have to remember that all this junk is probably around 20 years old and long past its use-by date. Under no circumstance should you attempt to reinstate it.

5- I could rebuild you a website based on kbgs.com with image browser and chat facility. But I am not going to do that because it is just putting off the evil hour (as Allan Jones appreciates): when I die or lose my faculties, who is then going to pick up the torch and carry on the website?

I repeat what I said earlier. You have two principal tasks:

a) Create a 'memorial site' which contains all the KBGS artefacts in digital form.

b) Maintain a message board so that you can all be nostalgic about pubs and chip shops until you have all, one after the other, dropped off the twig. After which no one will care any more and the chat room will fade into oblivion.

- You can just continue with the bravenet message board, until, that is, bravenet gives up the ghost.

- Someone with a basic web skillset could set up a Wordpress site (free), eg KBGS.wordpress.com. This could be your memorial site and could also allow comments and messaging functions.

- Ditto on any social media platform such as facebook.

Re: KBGS website.

@Nichols

Since for some reason it seems to interest you, the vexed question: why does GR choose to remain anonymous?

GR hated his time at the school, hated the staff and hated most of his fellow pupils. Under no circumstances does he want to participate in or contribute to this tribute website.

Anonymity is the social distancing, the facemask and the latex glove.

The Ghost of Arthur Watthey

Be still!

To whom it may concern.

The Grim Reaper has asked me to vouch for his authenticity.

I last met him in 2004, when he escorted me down the dark passages to the bank of the Styx.

He reminded me that we had in fact met before, when I beat him for some thing or other. Ah, the sizzle of thin cane on pert young bottoms!

Homework, he said it was. Lack of. Several times.

— 'No hard feelings?' I said.

— 'None at all, Sir', he replied, as he helped me onto the ferry. 'You'll find lots of old friends already on the other side - Kenny, Gilbert, Snake, Braithwaite, Milton, glass-eyed Moore...'

— 'Je vous souhaite un trés bon séjour eternel, Monsieur', he called as the ferry set off.

A charming chap. His French has certainly improved.

Anyway, must dash. Glowing coals this afternoon with my old pal Gilbert and his smoking-rubber gym pumps.

Yours faithfully

AE Watthey

Re: KBGS website.

@Pye

Why not devote your IT brainpower, Sean, to rescuing the website rather than trying to unmask me?

Anyway, it's too late.

The registration name kbgs.com, having expired, was taken over on 10th May 2020 by a Chinese person. So as far as the kbgs.com name is concerned, that is it. It's gone: drain circled and descended.

The new owner, Mr Shiqiong Luo, was rewarded for his attentiveness by acquiring the domain name for next to nothing.

NB: There are no more short domain names available on the internet. If an especially short one such as kbgs.com comes up for sale the buyer can expect to have to pay many thousands of dollars. However, you idiots here were all fussing about my identity instead of paying attention (like Mr Shiqiong Luo was) and you have let it crash out of ownership and allowed a Chinese person to pick it up for about $10.

Beyond pathetic.

Re: KBGS website.

@Mike Nichols

The people who know me, wife included, would agree with your every word and add a few of their own, too.

It seems that sitting at the feet of Kenny Preston teaches one to be able to roll with the insults.

------

@Shaun Pye: very perceptive. BTW: sorry I spelt your name wrongly in a previous comment.

------

But it still puzzles me why you are all mithering at me.

After all, I am the only one here who has made positive suggestions for rescuing the site. I am the only one who diagnosed the problem with the website and indicated possible solutions - none of which anyone in the intervening three months has addressed.

I refuse to get involved in a rescue attempt. Apart from being pointless, IMO, it would be hypocritical (Shaun's park bench, in other words).

BTW: since you have now got two threads running on this subject, I have had to post in both of them.

Anyway, the Grim Reaper has got a lot to do in these times of the plague. I'm sure we'll all meet up sometime soon...

Farewell, old comrades!
