When we started in the Maths Sixth Form John Whitley, Darrell Camm and I taught ourselves to play Bridge, along with Brian Horton who shared our form room (we also bought a table tennis table and a dartboard, and stored them in the stock cupboard). We used to spend breaks and a proportion of lunchtimes occupied in one or other of these pastimes. A few others in the Science Sixth also took advantage of the opportunity to do something worthwhile in the downtime.
These pastimes served me well at university and, along with snooker, provided an outlet when one of the more tedious lecturers was scheduled.
