Re: Ancestry

Didn't I read somewhere that anyone in the UK can trace their ancestry back to William the Conqueror? 'E was Fraunche, after all, and ze Fraunche zey are romantic peoples, no?

Re: Ancestry

You would probably have a problem trying to trace your tree Allan. It helps to have a less common name !

Re: Ancestry

In the beginning there was John...eventually he begat William the Conqueror (or Bill Jones as he was locally known).

Re: Ancestry

Well done Brian . I did the same thing when I retired at 72 and with the result that I traced a direct line back to William the Conqueror through my wife Mary's grandmother . In all I did all eight of our grandparents. Unfortunately mine ended up farm labourers or in poverty back in the late 1500's. Most of the others I got back to the early 1600's but hit the jackpot with Mary. Such names as King John, King Henry 1 and Henry 11 , Edward the Confessor, Matilda of Scotland and Llewellyn the Great of Wales . Took her line back to 460BC so quite a history lesson for me .
Don't take any notice of Allan's comments that every one can trace their ancestry back to William . The fact is they can't, the might all be descended from him but tell them to trace the line and see how far they can get
Good luck with your further research ---Mike

Re: Ancestry

Thanks Mike, I actually have two routes to William Conq, one via the Stanleys and de Bohun families, and another via Beauforts to John of Gaunt. My Great x14 Grandmother Lady Katherine Stanley is astonishingly also the Great x14 Grandmother of Barack Obama !

Re: Ancestry

Sorry wanted to do a couple of edits on that but it wouldnt let me ! President Obama is Barack Hussain Obama 2nd, his father being the 1st.

Katherine Stanley married Sir John Savage 4th (there were 9 Sir Johns in a line!). On of my ancestors (via mothers side) John Robinson (b 1520) married Anne Emmot Savage, the daughter of Sir John Savage 4th. Hence the connection.

Didn't you pick-up the connection Brian?
