Cricket at KBGS

I would like to initiate a posting in which Old Boys of KBGS can record their recollections (serious or humorous) of cricket at KBGS - either in timetabled games, house matches or representative games.
Please - don't be shy!!

Re: Cricket at KBGS

Although its an old post I thank Terry Marston for raising this issue.

If you played for a cricket team at KBGS be it the colts or the first team you got to travel on a Wednesday in the summer terms to some vey nice cricket grounds such as Ashville College (Harrogate), Woodehouse Grove (Apperley Bridge), Giggleswick Grammar School or Ermysteads at Skipton. They were picturesque sporting arenas with nice pavilions plus good nosh at tea time. And of course they were public school for the most part.

Much better than sitting out the rest of a tedious afternoon in Keighley or Oakbank. In a strange way a bit like going on a business trip in later life. You escaped the usual drudgery for a while. Winning or losing was irrelevant as there was no league table only a feeling of contentment if you defeated a clearly more well funded educational establishment. My only curiosity would be who organised the fixtures and whether they still exist. Unlikely I suspect.

Re: Cricket at KBGS

The ground and imposing pavilion at Ermysteads outside Skipton was as good if not better than most Bradford League arenas. They were interesting fixture lists for aspiring KBGS and Oakbank cricketers.

Jonathan - Sadly, Terry died some years ago. He was a great fellow to be around and is missed by many. Still lives on in this website, as in the memories of those who appreciated his wit.

Re: Cricket at KBGS

It was a good question and one of the better aspects of being at KBGS and later Oakbank. One felt a certain sense of pride when the Rev. Arthur Edward Watthey read out your name on the Monday morning assembly for feats achieved on the cricket field over the weekend before. I doubt that ever happens now at any West Yorkshire senior school.
