From Ocean's Eleven to Star Trek, weapons that wipe out enemy electronics are a staple of science fiction films.
For years, scientists have been attempting to create such a weapon as part of Champ, or the Counter-electronics High-powered microwave Advanced Missile Project.
Now, the US Air Force claims it has advanced the technology, and says it can deploy it using the stealthy Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM).

A freight train pictured carrying a convoy tanks towards the Ukrainian border looks to escalate tensions between the two sides even further.
The nine tanks arrived in the southern town of Matveev Kurgan on Monday, before being driven along the streets on Tuesday.
The picture, taken on a mobile phone, comes just days after a huge convoy, including rocket launchers, military trucks without licence plates and armoured personnel carriers, was photographed driving along a road near the town.

A radical new weapon that can fire a shell at mach three and use existing warship guns is believed developed by the US Navy.
The new guided rounds were originally designed as part of the Navy's railgun project, which will fire them at mach 5 - but is not expected to be available until 2025.
However, Navy bosses now believe they can adapt the projectiles to be fired through normal guns - albeit at a slower Mach 3 speed.

Islamic State has reduced the amount of water flowing to government-held areas in Iraq's western Anbar province by closing a dam on the Euphrates river.
The reduced flow through the insurgent-held dam will threaten irrigation systems and water treatment plants in nearby areas controlled by troops and tribes opposed to the extremist group, provincial council member Taha Abdul-Ghani told The Associated Press.
Abdul-Ghani said there would be no immediate effect on Shiite areas in central and southern Iraq, saying water is being diverted to those areas from the Tigris River.

This Vatican Speaker should speak for himself first and foremost. Does he want to be the first one to be annihilated by war or other means, and leave the 6 billion less one alone, to live their lives out in full. Let God be the judge of it, and not some mere mortal.
God gave us abundant life, man pressured by Satan, wants to cut human days short. The power seekers with acquired wealth can have more for themselves, while they slaughter the lesser then themselves in turn. Greed is their middle name, and their god after their riches.
This is an announcement by the Vatican speaker, to those who have ears, that all out World War 3 is in the works to depopulate the earth. Many like ourselves, who have no way out except to leave with Jesus, during the Rapture beforehand, for the Lord didn't appoint us to God's wrath.

Vladimir Putin has confirmed that Russia is set to receive 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles that are capable of piercing defence systems in the latest attempt to reignite a Cold War arms race.
Putin made the statement at the opening of an arms show at a shooting range in Alabino, just west of Moscow, which was a huge display intended to showcase the nation's resurgent military might.
The announcement also served as a blunt reminder of Russia's military power amid tensions with the west over the Ukraine crisis.

North Korea has test-fired newly deployed anti-ship rockets with a reported range of 120km just weeks after the country claimed it tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
The country's leader Kim Jong-un was pictured watching the test-firing of three KN-01 short-range missiles on Sunday from a site near the city of Wonsan, according to South Korea's defence ministry.
The 'highly intelligent' rockets were reportedly fired around 4.30pm on Sunday and lasted 26 minutes.

The A26 sub is 207 feet long, and features a 'ghost mode' to make it virtually undetectable when underwater.

Russia has claimed to have built a revolutionary new weapon system that can render enemy satellites and weapons useless.
Its Russian makers say it is a 'fundamentally new electronic warfare system' which can be mounted on ground-based as well as air- and sea-borne carriers.
However, it has refused to reveal how the system works.

The United States Air Force (USAF) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) have completed the first development flight test of a controversial update to a nuclear bomb that has been use since the 1960s.
A 'safe' version of the the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb with no warhead was tested at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada.
The tests are designed to extend the lifespan of the nuclear weapon by upgrading some of its parts.

The U.S. military began its secretive two-month, seven-state military exercise on Wednesday in Texas, as conspiracy theorists prepared for the worst.
The massive scale of the operation raised suspicions among right wing groups, many of whom fear the imminent imposition of martial law.
'Jade Helm 15', as the war simulation is known, is acknowledged by the Army as unique given its size and scope, but they insist there is nothing to fear.
Parts of Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Texas and Utah, were selected for the operation as their topography is ideal to replicate diverse foreign combat zones.
However, suspicions intensified after some conservative political websites seized on an Army map that labeled Texas and Utah as 'hostile' for the purposes of the simulation.
What should have been a routine training exercise has since spawned bizarre conspiracy theories concerning a Federal invasion of Texas, gun seizures, mass arrests, shuttered Wal-Marts being turned into internment camps and giant secret tunnels crisscrossing the country.

The army will soon use a brand new armoured vehicle equipped with state-of-the-art systems to take soldiers up to 20 times deeper into enemy territory.
Designed and built in the UK by General Dynamics, the new Scout SV will be used to counter threats from enemies like Islamic State.
It was developed as part of a £3.5billion programme and will replace the Scimitar light tank which has been used by the army since the 1970s and most recently saw action in Afghanistan.

A pair of B-52 bombers flew non-stop for 44 hours from Louisiana to Australia on a simulated bombing run to bolster allies in Asia against a growing Chinese threat.
The vintage planes, built in the 1950s, lifted off from the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, last month in what the Pentagon described as a 'bomber assurance and deterrence' mission.
It sent a message to Australia and the nations of South East Asia that the United States is willing and capable of assisting its allies.

Fresh satellite images suggest North Korea is expanding its uranium extraction capacity, possibly with a view to increasing its stockpile of nuclear weapons.
The images taken in Pyongyang show Kim Jong-un has begun to refurbish a major mill that turns uranium ore into yellowcake - a first step towards producing enriched uranium.
A recent report by U.S. researchers warned that Kim was poised to expand his nuclear programme over the next five years and, in a worst-case scenario, could possess 100 atomic weapons by 2020.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his troops onto a war footing after Pyongyang issued an ultimatum to Seoul to halt anti-North propaganda broadcasts or face military action.
South Korean and U.S. surveillance also detected the movement of North Korean vehicles carrying short-range Scud and medium-range Rodong missiles in preparation for possible launches, according a government source in Seoul.
Tension on the divided peninsula escalated on Thursday when North Korea fired shells into South Korea to protest against the loudspeaker broadcasts from the Korean border.

The United States will deploy F-22 fighter jets to Europe very soon as part of a broader effort to support eastern European members of the NATO alliance unnerved by Russia's intervention in Ukraine, Air Force Secretary Deborah James said on Monday.
James did not give details about the specific number of planes, date or location of the deployment, but said it was in line with Defense Secretary Ash Carter's recent call for a strong and balanced approach to Russia.
The first deployment of the Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-22 to Europe outside air shows is seen as a move to address growing concerns among NATO allies about Russian military aggression. The Air Force has also been using radar-evading F-22 fighter jets to carry out some its attacks against Islamic State, the first real combat air strikes by the jets.

Russia and NATO have been told they must agree to new rules on their military exercises to avoid triggering a war after 66 recorded 'close encounters' since March last year.
Relations between Russia and the West relations have been in the deep freeze after the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in March last year.
Since then, both sides have been intensifying their large-scale military exercises 'most likely with war plans in mind', according to recent research.

Wisconsin-based Oshkosh has won a major contract Tuesday to build a new combat vehicle to replace a large share of the U.S. military's Humvee troop carriers.
The Department of Defense awarded the $6.7 billion contract, and the Army and Marine Corps plan to buy as many as 55,000 JLTVs by 2040.

Boeing has revealed a radical new laser weapon small enough to fit into a suitcase - but poweful enough to blast a drone out of the sky.
The company's new Compact Laser Weapon System (LWS) breaks down into four parts, each transportable by one or two Marines.
It can be assembled in 15 minutes, and then destroy targets from up to 22 miles away with an an energy beam of up to 10 kilowatts.

A deadly sandstorm has engulfed part of the Middle East - killing at least eight people including two children and causing thousands to suffer breathing problems.
Large parts of Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Cyprus were shrouded in a thick cloud of dust from the storm that began sweeping into the region on Monday.
In Syria today, government warplanes and helicopters carried out fewer strikes as a result, but at least six people died across the country from respiratory failure, a monitor said.

Vladimir Putin has signed a decree drafting nearly 150,000 conscripts into the Russian military as Moscow's warplanes unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Syria.
The timing of the move – on the very day Russia entered the Syrian conflict yesterday – will raise suspicions the Russian President is planning a wider offensive to prop up his Syrian counterpart.

Iranian state television has broadcast unprecedented footage of a deep underground tunnel packed with missiles and launcher units, which officials said could be used if 'enemies make a mistake'.

The U.S. and Japan carried out a joint display of naval power on Sunday amid rising tensions with China over territorial claims in the South China Sea.
An armada of carriers, cruisers, destroyers and submarines gathered off Japan's coast in a move signalling wider engagement by the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific.
The so-called Fleet Review in seas near Tokyo was the first major display of Japanese military hardware since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won lawmaker approval for legislation that will allow Japanese soldiers to defend their foreign allies.
