A hurricane watch was issued for part of North Carolina's coast early Wednesday, covering an area from Bogue Inlet to Oregon Inlet, including Pamlico Sound. A tropical storm watch was in effect for parts of Florida and South Carolina. The storm's maximum sustained winds early Wednesday were near 60 mph (95 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Arthur was expected to strengthen and become a hurricane by Thursday.

Valerie, this must be the first hurricane of the season since it has an "A" name. Looks like a stormy 4th of July weekend for the east coast!

Arthur was my maternal grandmother's maiden name so it caught my attention. Our ancestors from that line came from Ireland close to Antrim in northern Ireland.

Side note for those who look for the symbolic, prophetic side to events - Arthur means "bear". With Russia the "Bear" flexing its muscles and fencing with the U.S. it is interesting that this first major storm seems to be connected.

Hurricane Arthur makes landfall at Outer Banks

Hurricane Arthur has made landfall near the southern end of North Carolina's Outer Banks. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Arthur reached land about 11:15 p.m. Thursday between Cape Lookout and Beaufort, North Carolina.
