DeAllaird family

If anyone can help me, I thank you. Our family name is D'Allaird (DeAllaird). A few years ago I learned our name was "dropped" then picked up again. My great grandparents used the name 'Jockow' in Vermont legal documents. I've traced them back to Wolcott,Orleans,VT.(James Jockow, born in 1800)I can't seem to go further back because of the name change. It was said that our gr-grandfather was born in Pierre,VT. My father, Walter J. always used that initial 'J' but did not have a middle name. He was born in 1881.There is no birth or baptismal record, because of a fire, both in the church and city hall in Troy, NY. So, I'm really at a brick wall, and don't know where to go from here. All records from 1880 use the name DeAllaird for the family events. The Census up to 1880 use the name Jockow. My grandmother always signed Jockow-DeAllaird in legal documents.
They migrated from Waterbury, Washington, Vermont to Troy, Rensselaer,New York
