Well folks it's that time of year again as the clock ticks down slowly and we wait in great anticipation for this weekend's Eurovision Song Contest. Has there ever been such a phenomenal music show that has united Europe for over half a century? It's hey day was without a doubt during the years when many of us attended PGS and we'd talk excitedly about it on the Monday morning. Who can ever forget Sandie Shaw dancing barefoot, Cliff Richard frolicking around the stage in gay abandon or Lulu grabbing equal 1st place with that anthem to soft drugs Bang, make a Bong (or something!) The 1974 winners of course went on to become superstars rivalling the Beatles for gorgeous melodies and wacky costumes. It's had it's highs and lows of course. Dana was angelic but Johnny Logan was a bore. How come little Ireland have won it 7 times? Vicky Leandros singing French was a reason to stick at the language in school, hoping that one day I'd fall in love with some chanson singing siren. So folks stock up on the Chardonnay and Riesling, get out the Feta and olives or even a crate of San Miguel and some Tapas, and have yourself a wonderful European night. You know it makes sense!
Another great event last night from Baku! Russian grannies singing, dancing and baking cookies. An Albanian singer who looked like she'd starred in a Star Trek film and could sing like an alien. A Turkish boyband who could turn their shirts into a boat and to top it all off an OAP entertainer for the UK who has probably shot himself in the foot and will now be lucky to get a job at the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club. The Eurovision Song Contest, I just love it to pieces. See you all in Sweden next year.
