LCpl Tom Harris, B Coy 5RAR (2nd tour)

Ben Harris, son of 2789765 LCpl Alfred Thomas (Tom) Harris, has placed a note in the guestbook of this website wanting to know if anyone can pass on info about his Dad who died when Ben was 6 months old.
I note that Tom was in 1 Aust Reinforcement Unit in Vietnam from 18/3/1969 to 14/4/1969 and then in 5RAR from 15/4/69 until we returned to Oz on 5/3/1970. The nominal roll I have shows that he came back with the main body on HMAS Sydney and that his leave destination was South Casino in northern NSW. As his "new unit" was listed as ECPD (Eastern Command Personnel Depot) it indicates he took his discharge soon after returning from active service.

NOW you old diggers, Tom was in B Company, so put your thinking caps on and see if you can help his son, Ben, with some info on him.

Happy hunting,
Dave

G'day Ben...

Good luck with your search for mates of your Dad.
I didn't know him, but can say that he wasn't in 6 platoon.

Thanks for coming to Ben's aid Dave....I knew you would.

Ben,

It may help if you provided the webmaster with a photo of Tom, preferably from his Army days.

Alright gents, Tom's photo is now on the notice board of this website. See if that helps jog the memory box.

Hi Ben
I was just reading about your request for info about your father Tom......
I was the medic with B Coy after Mick gregory was wounded and I spent a couple of months with Tom up on SAS Hill...we bunked up in the same tent. Tom was my stretcher bearer in the company...I can always remember him recording music on his reel to reel tape recorder.
Distinctly remember him being an avid letter writer as well.
I was dismayed to hear that he had such a short life....in my book he was a good bloke and always went out of his way to help. I am at the moment trying to retrieve a lot of my photos from slides....maybe there is a photo of Tom amongst them.
Can't remember too much about him these days however always remember him berating me severely for making a mess in the tent by missing the helmet when having a chunder.....strewth!...didn't he go off
Cheers
Ian Cooper
