Silverchair have been typecast, and it's unfortunate. If you listen to their latest record, or 2002's Diorama, you wouldn't even know it was the same band that put out "Tomorrow" and "Pure Massacre."
Now, I'm not saying their new album is deserving of a top spot, but they're not the grunge band that everyone thinks they are. They shed that sound long ago for an experimental, cinematic sound. It's unfortunate (and shortsighted) that most people still have their heads in 1995.
It's true that Silverchair have changed, Anthony, but I don't think they've really improved much, either. I've heard both Diorama and Young Modern and would give both less than 2.5 stars.
I didn’t say those were the greatest records either, but at least Silverchair stepped out of the shadow of their idols to forge their own path. Give credit where it’s due.
Anyone who still thinks of Silverchair as the young, long blonde-haired poster-boys of "coattail grunge" really should realy listen to Diorama. They might be surprised.
Yes, I will grant that they jumped ship, but they seem to have done so to avoid extinction like many other grunge bands did (and synth pop bands back in the mid 80s). I do prefer their newer material, but I still don't think it is anything more than C-grade. That said, my wife dragged me to a concert of theirs (after much immature kicking and screaming, I concede!) and I thought they put on a very good show. So I will award them that respect.
