Re: These 90s Tracks...

Today's section was incredible. So many personal favorites and solid choices. I was glad to see some acclaim for "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space," my number 3 track of all time which is inexplicably absent from the AM 3000. The only really surprising choices were "Girls and Boys" (I like the song, but over "Song 2," "Coffee and TV," "This is a Low," and "For Tomorrow?") and "Needle in the Hay" (I thought "Waltz #2" or "Between the Bars" would be the Elliott Smith choice). There were so many great songs today that I'm not sure what's left for the top 20.

Re: These 90s Tracks...

Nirvana, Pavement, Radiohead and Beck are all locks for tomorrow I bet. What else is going to be there? Has there been any Weezer yet?

I'd like to see Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge," but I doubt that Pitchfork would place it so high. Then again, before this week I never thought that I would see "November Rain" on a Pitchfork list either.

I'd say My Bloody Valentine, Belle and Sebastian, Neutral Milk Hotel, DJ Shadow, Bjork, Dr. Dre and Notorious BIG are safe bets. Also possibly Aphex Twin and Enjoy the Silence (that one may be wishful thinking).

Re: These 90s Tracks...

I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST.

Trailer Trash for Modest Mouse was absolutely perfect. I've just got into that album and I think it's brilliant, and that song is truly great.

Slightly sad Massive Attack did so poorly (can't remember the number). Unfinished Sympathy surely is a masterpiece.

Re: These 90s Tracks...

Here are my predictions for the top 20. I'm really confident about these 14:

Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Beck - "Loser"
Pavement - "Summer Babe"
My Bloody Valentine - "Soon"
Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945"
Pulp - "Common People"
Dr. Dre - "Nuthin' But a G Thang"
Notorious B.I.G. - "Juicy"
Wu-Tang Clan - "C.R.E.A.M."
Daft Punk - "Da Funk"
Weezer - "Buddy Holly"
Aphex Twin - "Windowlicker"
DJ Shadow - "Midnight in a Perfect World"

Not so sure about these six:

Depeche Mode - "Enjoy the Silence"
Belle and Sebastian - "The State I Am In"
Bjork - "Hyperballad" (could be a lot of different songs for her)
Talk Talk - "Ascension Day"
Rage Against the Machine - "Killing in the Name"
Mazzy Star - "Fade into You"

Re: These 90s Tracks...

I've never seen so many people liking a Pitchfork list before

and a Belle and Sebastian track to pick is something pretty hard to do, i have no idea which one is going to make it, although i do know it will be a "If you're feeling sinister" one (here's some hoping for "Seeing Other People" or "Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying"), but i would be great if it was The State I Am In.

You got alot of the artists right but went with the wrong songs.

and JR - MotownPhilly should have been much higher on hat list.

Re: These 90s Tracks...

My predictions weren't that bad! That Aaliyah song came out of nowhere, but I should have remembered their OutKast fetish. I knew I had a lot of those artists right, it was just really hard to pick the songs for them.

As far as the picks themselves go, I really like "Gold Soundz," but it makes no sense as a number one pick for a decade. I guess it's more interesting than going with "Paranoid Android" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but it just doesn't feel right. In fact, something felt a little awkward about the whole top twenty. I think I preferred yesterday's section to today's.

I completely agree, the top twenty was a huge let down. Gold Soundz as the best song of the 90's? It's not even one of my favorite Pavement songs let alone one of the best songs from the 90's.

There's Some...

good stuff on the list, but, as the resident Madonna Acclaim seeker, pretty disappointing that there wasn't a single Madonna entry- especially when something like "Motownphilly"- as one example- is on there. "Vogue," "Ray of Light" or "Beautiful Stranger," for example, aren't "cool" enough for Pitchfork critics?

What is your problem with "Motownphilly"?

I Don't...

despise "Motownphilly" or anything, but I don't find it to be one of the best tracks of the 90s- at least when others that are more deserving are not ranked. "Motownphilly" doesn't even show up on the AM site in terms of acclaim- but, every now and then, a stray, non-acclaimed track makes it onto a big list, so there ya go.

Re: I Don't...

Loved seeing Biggie so high, he's my favorite rapper, and the only with 2 songs in my top 100. Now, since everyone's curious, my top rap songs (Not all are top 100):
1. Juicy - Biggie
2. The Message - Grandmaster Flash
3. Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
4. Big Poppa - Biggie
5. Rock Box - Run DMC
6. Lose Yourself - Eminem
7. Rapper's Delight - Sugarhill Gang
8. Walk This Way - Run DMC
9. Express Yourself - N.W.A
10. Hypnotize - Biggie

I'll Probably...

be more impressed with Slant's upcoming Best of the 90s list (set for early next year), as it undoubtedly will have at least one Madonna track on it.

Listyguy, no female rap songs? Do you have a favorite?

Re: I'll Probably...

Hmm... Female Rap?
I'd have to go with Blondie's "Rapture"

Re: I'll Probably...

Female rappers to me only Missy and Lauryn. I wish i could like Lil Kim, but i just can't...

I really want a Slant list, it will be full of females: Bjork, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan and then the bunch of classics we've since known from that terrific decade.

Indeed...

Slant is not afraid to show the female love, and include pop along with the indie-type tracks. I'd think that Madonna could place with "Vogue" and something from the Ray of Light era.

RE female rappers- what about Salt-N-Pepa? Queen Latifah also would be another of the "pioneers." But, yeah, in terms of overall consistency and output, Missy Elliott is the one to beat. Lauryn Hill finally has another album in the works, so we'll see how she shapes up.

Re: Indeed...

From Slant.. well, i'm not afraid to say that Madonna might be the largest number of songs and then, Ray of Light is a lock of the favorite albums, and we might see Erotica too, which is very underrated in my opinion.

Erotica...

I've always appreciated the cold, icy intent of (most of) Erotica and I respect that direction. But, for my own taste, I enjoy listening to other Madonna albums more- Like a Prayer and Ray of Light, particularly. The critics have gotten it right in citing those as her finest studio albums.

I'm not sure if Slant also will do an albums list in conjunction with the songs list. I'll ask.

For Henrik...

I know you include "See also..." features for other features, but I gather you do not want the "See also..." songs that follow each entry, as that's an additional 300 tracks (in some cases, the tracks are ones by the same act)
