Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Henrik, are you going to add this to your critic's lists? Or is anyone going to comment on Colin Larkins list?

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Crap list. I mean he's included Kula Shaka, Robbie Williams & Sting for goodness sake. It's also too stuck in the 60's & 70's. This is what you inevitably get when just one critic compiles an all-time list.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Well, one critic's opinion is exactly what it is, and it pretends to be nothing else. If the "truth" is out there, Larkin sure doesn't claim to know it. He's opinionated and fun to read. You don't have to agree with him.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Actually The Byrd's 'Mr. Tambourine Man' is a great choice for # 1, 'Eight Miles High' at 12 too & good he put 'Like A Rolling Stone' at 3. But there's only 2 songs from after 1979 in the top 20, 8 in the top 50.

Also, btw, Colin's criteria for inclusion was that each song had to have been officially issued as a single in the UK & only one choice per artist - except the Beatles, Dylan & the Byrds ("because it's my list & i'm in charge"). So a dodgy criteria if ever i saw one.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

I had no idea that Colin had ever compiled a list using his own preference alone. Certainly I will include this list "because it's my site & I'm in charge".

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

OK fine, but i think you should therefore only include the highest placed Beatles, Dylan & Byrds songs - get's rid of the obvious bias.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Why? He obviously prefer these artists...

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

"Why? He obviously prefer these artists..."

Exactly. This list is obviously far too subjective.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

I made a mistake; Colin's list was from 2000, not 1999. I'm just saying in case it affects the result when you factor the list in, Henrik.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Charlie, all critics lists are subjective. Lists from single critics are obviously more subjective/personal, but if I didn't include single critics' lists then there would always be the usual Beatles, Dylan and Byrds songs. Yes, there would be more of these particular artists.

In my opinion, single critics lists are important, it's only from them that we get to know about the lesser known but equally good albums/songs.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Certainly I will include this list "because it's my site & I'm in charge.
The free folk of this forum will never bear such tyranny. We will revolt against the despot Henrik and establish The People's Website of Acclaimed Music.

Re: Colin Larkin's All-Time Top 100 Singles

Kula Shaker, Sting and Robbie Williams are hardly 60s or 70s music....

Btw. I miss those books. I think there hasn't been an edition since 1999 by now, and the Muze site is long since gone off the Net. About time, Mr. Larkin?
