I do remember a recommended reading list given to us by Tony (Percy) Peart (RIP) in the third year. It included 'Sons and Lovers' by DH Lawrence, 'A Passage to India' by EM Forster, 'Brighton Rock' by Graham Green, 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck, 'For whom the Bell Tolls' by Ernest Hemingway , 'The Catcher in the Rye' by JD Salinger, '1984', 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding and a few more. Besides the Lawrence mentioned above, we were pretty keen to get hold of 'Lady Chatterleys Lover' , and an illicit copy was passed around a few of us...It contained the passage.... ' Ee tha'art a right bit o' cunt M'lady'.. 'Whats Cunt?' she replied etc etc
