Yes, we're counting down again! The River is a surprise at #96 (the overall position, not Nicolas' vote). It's undervalued at AM due to its late release as a single (sometime in 1981, I think). |

Thanks for bringing up Beach Boys' later albums in the threads over the pass year. That is what sparked my interest in Surf's Up and what hopefully assisted Till I Die's strong showing! |

Looking back, I didn't review "Heroin" very well! What I meant to say is that I think it's brilliant how the song's raw strings and rapidly changing percussion mimic a burnt heart's reaction to heroin. |

how to disappear completely!? u serious!? a good song, a very good song, but IMO, it doesn't even deserve to be on the list, let alone in the top 100. having said that, if there's anyone who doesn't have the right to complain about the results, it's me. i chose not to influence them... by the way, thanks heaps moonbeam, i didn't know quite a few of these songs and i probably wouldn't still if it wasn't for your posting youtube links. they're all fantastic songs so i'm glad you've made it convenient for me to listen to them. big thanks everyone who participated, and to moonbeam in particular. thanks for expanding my musical knowledge |

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
Yes I agree Moeboid,to have How To Disappear Completely at #81 is completely unexpected - not a song I'd put among their best. I'll have to get 'Fall On Me' - I have 5 R.E.M. albums but have never heard that particular song... |

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
I was pretty sure "Fall on Me" was going to show up at some point...although I did think I'd be the only person who picked it at #1. Thanks, Stammer! "Fall on Me" has been my favorite song for almost 20 years now, ever since I saw it performed on the Green tour. Also, I second Rendle--I am absolutely kicking myself for forgetting Sam Cooke's magnum opus. |

schleuse, nice to see that your recent research in Nick Drake resulted in the love of "River Man"! |

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
I'm with you Schlesue. While my top list is always changing "Fall On Me" has been on top since 1986. Your comment about seeing it performed live got me thinking, does anybody have songs that they don't particularly like the studio version but live performances, covers, alt. takes, etc. make them reevaluate and put the song on their list. Alternately any songs that you think "man that could be a great song" but just couldn't put it on your list because of bad production, etc. Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell was one for me. I always liked the song but for years couldn't get by the cheesy 70's production, particularly the intro. But hearing many covers (including REM) and especially some of Glen's own bareboned live versions (there's a great in studio version with Stone Temple Pilots of all people) the song has steadily moved up to near the top of my list. |

I got one. When I first heard Vanessa Carlton's "Ordinary Day" I thought it was rather boring, but one day a friend of mine sent me an acoustic live version of the song and it blew me away. It's at #151 in my list right now. |

I'm being totally detailed-obsessed hear but I thought I had the highest ranking for SP's 1979 when I made an earlier comment, when in fact I overlooked the boldface that said Pop Elton had made it his #1. Good tastes, P.E., and thanks for giving the songs the hefty points to get it into the top 100. So for now it looks like I was the biggest champion of Maps. Fine with me. |

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
I haven't weighed in on the song list yet, probably mostly because I didn't participate and thus have no real "rooting interest" - it's just fun to watch it unfold. Now that we're well into the top 100, though, I feel compelled to echo the consensus that this is one hell of a fascinating, eclectic list, with more genuine surprises than one normally finds on top-songs lists. That said, I fully expect to see more and more dominance by a few selected artists (BD, the B's, Rh, maybe the RS) as we get closer to the top. I could be wrong, but I tend to doubt it. |

I LOVE the original "Wichita Lineman" production, but then again I'm a sucker for late-'60s pop. Also, it's fantastic that "Til I Die" made the Top 100. |

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
I agree with you guys. I'm just a slow learner I have over 50 cover versions of the song and the original is by far the definitive one. Just for me it took the song to be reduced to the haunting melody and Glen's beautiful voice to appreciate what a "great" song it was.

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 3)
Stammer : to answer your question, I think Thirteen would not be in my top 10 without Elliott Smith's cover ! But well, I like the original one and it would have been in my top 200 in any case, but I love that cover so much ! And I probably would not know Sly Stone's Loose Booty if Beastie Boys has not used almost every bit of that song to make Shadrach. |

Now I'm starting to be really sorry for self-sabotaging my list. I should have made a more serious one, instead of trying to mix gold with chaff. At least I boosted a few good songs. |

Since I put it in #6, I think only one more vote would have been enough to make Thirteen reach the top 500... since we haven't seen it yet, it must be in the top 75 ! (you can guess the name about your top 3 songs if they have not appeared yet in the top 500 ! ) |
