Henrik 1. Studio - Yearbook 1 (24 points) 2. Burial - Untrue (22) 3. Radiohead - In Rainbows (16) 4. Jens Lekman - Night Falls at Kortedala (8) 5. Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur (5) 6. Feist - The Reminder (5) 7. PJ Harvey - White Chalk (5) 8. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (5) 9. Gravenhurst - The Western Lands (5) 10. M.I.A. - Kala (5) John 1. Wu-Tang Clan: 8 Diagrams-I wish I had more time to listen to this, but I like it just as much on the 10th or 11th listen as the 1st. This stacks up with 36 Chambers, The W and Forever. 19 points 2. Tegan and Sara: The Con- The album kind of dies a little at the end but it starts out stronger than any album I heard this year. The first 5-6 tracks could very well be at the top of my songs list. 16 points 3. Talib Kweli: Ear Drum- After a disappointing album Kweli comes back with an equal to his great 2002 release Quality.13 points 4. The National: Boxer- Such a moody album. Brainy is easily my favorite track of the year. 12 points 5. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists: Living With the Living- I've always like Ted Leo's albums but never loved them. I love this one. 10 points 6. MIA: Kala- I think this is better than Arular. I know a lot of people think she took a step back but I think it was a big step forward. 8 points 7. Battles: Mirrored- Wins my vote for the most innovative album of the year. It has a few flaws. I would have loved to see these guys when they came through. 7 points 8. Radiohead: In Rainbows- It's good. I just don't think it's anywhere near Kid A or Hail To the Thief let alone OK Computer. It's good but we've heard it before. 5 points 9. Chromeo: Fancy Footwork- The "fun" electronic album of the year. 5 points 10. Nina Nastasia/Jim White: You Follow Me- This is one of the coolest albums of the year and I don't even think they were trying for that label. Jim White's drumming is amazing and Nastasia brings it all together. 5 points Jonah 1. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver - 25 2. Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity - 15 3. The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - 12 4. Caribou - Andorra - 10 5. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam - 9 6. Liars - Liars - 7 7. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - 7 8. M.I.A. - Kala - 5 9. Battles - Mirrored - 5 10. Besnard Lakes - Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse - 5 Lonesome Panda LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver 30 I was not much a fan of LCD's first album, I found it quite boring after the end of the 4 first track (which were amazing, especially Tribulations). But it didn't take long before their second piece of art have conquered me. The opening track sums up what we could have been expected, great rythm, impressive production, that song talks at the same time to your brain and your feet. Watch the Tapes and Time to get away are great pop/punk/rock songs, North American Scum is the dancefloor hit we hoped for, Us v Them brings his fabulous rythms to make everybody move at the sounds of bells ! But the real standout tracks are the two fabulous songs in the middle of the album, Someone Great and All My Friends reveals a deeper emotional range. We already knew James Murphy had the sens of rythm and production, but he then provides sincere and personal lyrics enhanced by an impressive sense of production, every single instrument seems to have his balance and volume exactly settled. The crescendo of All My Friends is really stunning, perfectly mastered ! The 2 last songs also prove that this band has an impressive range of possibilities, the title song should be exactly what I don't like, but I can not resist to it, and New-York I love you is a witty love song with a great ending... No album this year came even close ! Elliott Smith New Moon 20 I don't like saying that, but Elliott Smith must have been a dumbass! Who would have seriously not let those tracks appear in an album ? What is amazing is that almost half of those B-Sides overpass some of Either/or tracks and there are even some of the best Elliott's song ever, in particular the intense half right and high times (with those simple but beautiful lyrics "I don't know where I'm supposed to go but I don't go really anywhere you know"). Elliott does not vary much but offers a few changes in rawer songs. And he finds the perfect songs to cover, Big Star's Thirteen, and do it with grace ! Battles Mirrored 10 The only album this year which has really changed my way of listening to music… well, Sound of Silver has proved that repetition can be the path of awesomeness, Panda Bear, Caribou or Animal Collective might have shown me the beauty of strange, but this one really is a shock compared with standards, with stranges rythms, voices, harmonies... but it remains melodic and fascinating ! I guess it is often "math" or "prog" rock but avoid the usual problems of those genres by remaining listener friendly ! Arcade Fire Neon Bible 8 A deception at first ! Since it really is nothing like a "Funeral 2, the return of the vengeance" but those clever songs need time to grow and become like familiar friends. Keep the car Running is of a rare intensity, Intervention is deeply poignant, No Cars Go reminds us of the greatest moments of Funeral, the title song is a dark monument... Arcade Fire confirms that they are a major band ! Cocoon My Friends all died in a plane crash 6 What if young Ben Harper met Damien Rice and created an album guided by the spirits of Nick Drake, Elliott Smith and the Care Bears ? This would probably lead to this album, who don't need to be any surprising to be charming Architecture in Helsinki Places like that 5 This one makes me happy ! Well it's less wonderful than In Case We die but it still kicks ass ! The most underrated album of the year. Klaxons Myths of the Near Future 6 Not every hyped album is overrated ! This one truly is great, with nearly only great songs Burial Untrue 5 Strangely hypnotizing, creepy and familiar, the soundtrack of suburbs Dizzee Rascal Maths + English 5 Boy ! Let him get old school ! Queens of the Stone Age Era Vulgaris 5 Not their best, but they still rock ! And there are 5 wonderful tracks : the psychedelic Turning on the Screw, the mad Sick, Sick, Sick, the deeply dark Into the Hollow, the heavy 3's & 7's and overall the sexier song of the year, I wanna make it wit' chu Bubbling under Panda Bear Person Pitch Those three really are interesting, in many ways fascinating, but still a little too hermetic in an important part to reach my top 10 Caribou Andorra Animal Collective Strawberry Jam !!! Myths Takes Sounds to me like the first LCD album, a few awesome tracks (All my heroes are weirdos, must be the moon, bend over Beethoven) but too many repetitive songs |

Harvey - White Chalk (10) 5) Band of Horses - Cease to Begin (9) 6) Soulsavers - It's Not How Far you Fall, It's How you Land (8) 7) Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (7) 8) Radiohead - In Rainbows (6) 9) Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (6) 10 Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (5) Sonofsamiam [01] PJ Harvey | White Chalk (25 pts) - Critics keep writing about the piano, and the change in style, even the cover, but too few talk about the incredible songs like they should. This is a singular album, distinct from fashion and time, bearing similarity to now-acknowledged classics like Pink Moon and The Marble Index in that it's short, succinct, stark, sparsely instrumented, somewhat terrifying, often beautiful, and absolutely brilliant. PJ's best work yet, and that's saying something. My guess is this gets reappraised even more favorably a couple decades from now. [02] Antibalas | Security (12 pts) - Where they quit just aping Fela, take a cue from new competitors Nomo, and introduce more funk & jazz into the Afro-Beat stew, with John McEntire producing to great effect. This is impossibly tight stuff, and "Beaten Metal" is the slept-on track of the year. [03] Terence Blanchard | A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina) (10 pts) - This is the best contemporary jazz album I've heard in many years; Blanchard takes musical cues from Miles but never sounds like an imitator, all the while somehow capturing the tragedy of Katrina in very human terms. Gorgeous and often very sad. [04] Orchestra Baobab | Made In Dakar (9 pts) - All these years on, this amazing Senegalese group continues to age like the finest of wines. [05] Radiohead | In Rainbows (8 pts) - Radiohead, finally at ease. And it suits them. [06] Lucky Soul | The Great Unwanted (8 pts) - The '00s finally have their own Saint Etienne, though with more sugar and bounce. And it's about damn time! [07] Tinariwen | Aman Iman: Water Is Life (7 pts) - [08] Jay-Z | American Gangster (7 pts) - The early '70s soul influence on this suits Jay-Z extremely well. [09] Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings | 100 Days, 100 Nights (7 pts) - Who knew that throwback soul could sound so abaolutely fresh in '07? The Dap Kings back Amy Winehouse too, but I'll take 'em with Sharon Jones any day. [10] LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver (7 pts) - For an artist so linked with hipster status and the aloof pose that most equate with that, there sure is a heck of emotion and even nostalgia dripping from this album. And "Someone Great" is one of the tracks of the decade. Bubbling Under [11] Gui Boratto | Chromophobia [12] Burial | Untrue [13] Ghostface Killah | The Big Doe Rehab [14] Dungen | Tio Bitar [15] Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. | Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under The Stars [16] Aesop Rock | None Shall Pass [17] El-P | I'll Sleep When You're Dead [18] Yoko Ono | Yes, I'm a Witch [19] Super Furry Animals | Hey Venus! [20] Feist | The Reminder [21] Grinderman [22] Herbie Hancock | River: The Joni Letters [23] Robert Plant and Alison Krauss | Raising Sand [24] Jens Lekman | Night Over Kortedala [25] The National | Boxer |

Stammer Although I don't think there was any clearcut classics out there this year I think 2007 had a deeper selection of good albums than in recent years. 9 through 30 was rough and I can see major changes in the future. Re: 2007 AM Pazz & Jop Individual Lists
Rocky, let me be the first to say thank you for posting the individual lists! There are quite some albums unknown, so to further investigate for me ... but that's gonna be tomorrow, it's a bit late here now in Europe, and work is calling again in a few hours

Re: 2007 AM Pazz & Jop Individual Lists
"Radiohead, finally at ease. And it suits them." Yeah, about as calm as a 14 year-old Anthony on his first date with a girl. Awk-ward. Radiohead haven’t dialed down the intensity - it’s still there in spades; they’ve just altered their scope slightly. The technological has become the personal. "I am trapped in this body and can't get out". Or how about: "I'm an animal trapped in your parked car". And my personal favorite: "This is my way of saying goodbye/Because I can't do it face to face". A comfortable Thom Yorke would not make for an interesting Thom Yorke. |

Well, the lyrics will never be "at ease" as long as Yorke writes them, we all know that. I was focusing more on the music in regard to my comment, and there's a lot less jaggedness and dissonance on this record, plus a lot less shifting in texture from track to track. This is not a bad thing at all -- they just seem more restful sonically, which may or may have to do with no longer being married to a label. Anyway, I was just making a lame attempt at a bad pun, given the "fitter, happier" lyrics.
