The top 100 songs from the 1990s - the final results, page 2
To not make it too heavy with all the images, I'm starting a new thread for the top songs of the 1990s poll. The first part can be found here. This is also a perfect time to summarize the list so far, and correct for an unfortunate error. #45 Belle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the Movies (1996) Score: 1298 points Biggest fans: Honorio (#2), Miguel (#4), Mo (#8) Comments: “If they follow you don’t look back / like Dylan in the movies”. Fragile and sensitive pop from Scotland, with references to “Don’t Look Back”, the D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Dylan. A band of braggarts (being heavy-metal or hip-hop) would have not been bold enough to talk about the fear you feel when somebody follows you down the street. But is fear what you feel, don’t you? #41  Beastie Boys - Sabotage (1994) Score: 1310 points Biggest fans: Toni (#2), LonesomePanda (#3), otisredding (#8) Comments: One of the greatest hip-hop band creating one of the greatest guitar riff (LonesomePanda) I remember rocking out every time I saw this on VH1 Megahits. I miss that channel, well at least I still have th song. (Rendle) Put aside the fun video for a second. This messy, punky smash works. Thank God they don't play their instruments particularly well on this track. (Schwah) I used to like rap songs some years ago and, as I gradually become a rock fan, I passed to think all of that genre's songs were discardable. That was until I came to this one. #40  Blur - Song 2 (1997) Score: 1312 points Biggest fans: Howlin' Andrew and Michel (#5), Slush (#11) Comments: Like someone said, it's the band who estimulated the opposition creating one of the most purely grunge songs ever. Hey Henrik: I'm here... I don't like pressing refresh every 10 seconds so I'm doing other things on my computer. I'm eager to see where Dry the Rain ends up. I said this is Bracketology but I think that song is going to be the Hey Jude of this generation. If you hate Hey Jude, that might not be a good thing, though. |

#36  Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger (1995) Score: 1331 points Biggest fans: Tim (#2), Toni (#6), DrDre (#9) Comments: OK, Beatles-cloning, but still a very strong song, Oasis' best song. (DrDre) One of the best melodies of this tournament. It's grandioquent, emotional, simple, creative and one of that kind of melodies that seems that was somewhere waiting a genius to discover it. The California Love ranking kind of ticks me off, but the rest of the list has been pretty good. I'm glad the Blur/Brit-pop uprising was given it's walking papers. |

#35  Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (1990) Score: 1355 points Biggest fans: Henrik (#1), Neoptolemos (#6), John and Chris (#10) Comments: A simple but fabulous guitar from Martin Gore added emotion to the electronic beats and the deep voice of Gahan singing “Words are very unnecessary / they can only do harm”. (Honorio) Very possibly the best synth-pop single. (Rendle) Place in the 1990 poll: 2 Acclaimed Music 1990s rank: 176 |

#34 Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (1997) Score: 1369 points Biggest fans: MightyMadMax (#3), Mitchell Stirling (#6), Honorio, Dumbangel and pop elton (#10) Comments: Chamber-pop or space-pop? Well, really both. The hypnotic drones of the previous albums get mixed here with chamber strings and a classic structure of canon. The “spiritual” feel and the narcotic effect that produces fits perfectly with the album cover art: a pharmaceutical package wrapping a big drug. Henrik-- I just checked in and saw how gracious you were, saying that you messed up my list when it was entirely my fault. All the hard--and very cool--work you put in and I screwed up the group rankings for everyone because of my careless error. Tried too fast to put final touches on the list after a hard day in the office. I apologize to everyone here. But at least now everything is worked out. #32  Deee-Lite - Groove Is in the Heart (1990) Score: 1372 points Biggest fans: otisredding (#1), DrDre (#2), Schwah (#5) Comments: “We’re going to dance / and have some fun”. An irresistible dance groove, some distinguished collaborations (Bootsy Collins on bass, Q-Tip on rap and samples from Maceo Parker brass) and Lady Miss Kier as the perfect disco diva made one of the best dance numbers ever. “Just de-lovely and delicious”. (Honorio) My favorite dance track of the 90's. Groovy video clip as well. (DrDre) If dance music mavens weren't so damned insular so much of the time, we could have had many other perfect dance pop gems like this one… although they would have needed to recruit Maceo, Bootsy, and Q-Tip as well. Hmm. Up to number 33 and still no Radiohead--but two Nirvana. Looking like Radiohead will be the band of the decade, not Nirvana. I'm a Nirvana man, myself. |

One thing that was fun about doing these rankings was rediscovering things I'd compleatly forgotten about. Although it wasn't near the top of my list, it was great to listen to (and watch the video for) Groove is in the Heart again. |

More stats. Of the top 30 songs, 12 are also in the AM top 30 of the 90s, while 12 of the others are not even in the AM top 100. And two of those ("Let Down" and "Nightswimming") are not on AM at all. |

I said "Ladies and Gentlemen..." was this poll's biggest surprise to me, but out of the singles, the next song probably takes the prize. From #9 in its year's poll right into place 27 of the decade. |

No question. (Rendle) The greatest song Dave Grohl has ever been any part of. (I'm talking to you, Nirvana fans.) This song is also inextriably linked to its wonderful Gondry-directed video for me. I have 2 Radiohead songs in my top 10 But the other 4 are 12, 15, 28, 33i think Radiohead is the group on which tere is the strongest consensus |

lol, my Top Ten is starting to wear away fast. Sad to see "Only Shallow" so low (#44 is very low for that song imo), but still good to see it in the Top 50. Has any Looks like ALL of Radiohead's songs will be in the Top 25. Wow. |

As I wrote earlier today, I think it plays a role that Radiohead is in the spotlight now. Just released a new and good album, influences our voting heavily I guess. Or they are really that good ... |

About who's going to be number one: I wrote earlier that "this is a very tight game. That is, all the way up to number 2!" Clarification: "this is a very tight game. That is, all the way up to (and including) number 2!" Well, actually there's a jump between #4 and #3 as well. |

Ugly ones of the world, united! (Honorio) Hit that got them in the picture, in times where Grunge and Nirvana ruled. There aren't many of these 90s bands that still are existing or creating music even close to their original caliber. That's probably another reason Radiohead is doing well. I'm not sure if having 1995 and 1997 being weak years for music for some people is a factor. I know someone said 1997 was great but I remember I had trouble putting together my album and song list. OK Computer might have had more songs crack the top 10 because of that. |

(Lazy OK Computer/White Album comparison, pt. 2) (Rendle) Writing this I wonder why did I put OK Computer so low ranked in my list... I can't anymore think which of this 4 I like most and least. Well, this one is a delicious guided-by-piano track. We can say that much of the New Acoustic style that would dominate the 00s has its basis here, although it is far from being a gratuitous ballad like most that are spread on radios today. i don't think a Radiohead song will be nb 1, although I'm pretty sure OK Computer will win the albums contest radiohead are like the Beatles,they are an excellent album band but they don't have a standout song So, like the Beatles (first song nb 16 in the all-time songs list), Radiohead won't be nb 1 because everybody didn't put the same song in 1st position On the contrary, REM (Losing), Nirvana (Smells), Verve (Bittersweet, not thanks to me), Pulp (Common people, U2 (One)are too me more likely to win |

Woderwall is a cover, DrDre? I had no idea. Sounds so very Oasis-ish to me. Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily want it to be higher (and as Steve Earle said "if you don't vote, don't bitch"), I just thought it was very highly regarded. But not bad to be no. 21 of a decade either :-) |

Well, I always thought Wonderwall was a cover. I just googled to confirm my thoughts ... not a cover!?! The Mike Flowers Pops hat a hit with it in 1995 and that sounded like 50's music, but in fact they got it from Oasis.
