I hope i typed all that out correctly...

Anyways, i thought it might be interesting to see how much this forum agrees with that ranking. if you could re-order them, how would you do it?

I'm just outraged that Born to Run isn't in the top 20! Once you get past the top 4 or so, I don't have terribly strong feelings where the songs should fall. But the exercise is fun, anyway.

This was a treat--I had convinced myself I couldn't stand any of these songs anymore, and now I found myself not being able to put many under 10th place! In general, although I love a song with raw power, I seemed to favor the songs with more thoughtful melodies and words than the get-by-on-a-feeling songs, which tend not to do much for me twenty years on.

1. Like a Rolling Stone (This could actually be the best song ever!)
2. What's Going On? (Still evokes a sad feeling)
3. The Message (A fresh-sounding treat)
4. Strawberry Fields Forever (SO well-written)
5. My Generation (Out of all the "perfect-example-of-rock-attitude" songs on this list, this is the one that still sells the attitude!)
6. A Day in the Life (An exciting journey from start to finish)
7. I Heard It Through the Grapevine (Creates a mood that no other song quite creates)
8. Stairway to Heaven (see #6)
9. Smells Like Teen Spirit (While obviously a product of its time, this doesn't yet feel dated--still a thrilling song)
10. Satisfaction (I'm the world's biggest Stones fan--this is the only song of theirs I'll turn off if I hit it on the radio, yet I gotta give love to the Stones)
11. Respect (Such a good performance)
12. Be My Baby (Not THE big Spector song that should be on this list, but still good)
13. Anarchy in the U.K. (While I still appreciate the Sex Pistols more than like them, this IS their best song, and is quite delicious)
14. Love Will Tear Us Apart (The last of these songs I got to know well--still fresh to me)
15. Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay (Charming, but not my favorite of the artist or genre)
16. Good Vibrations (While I appreciate the production, this has too many diversions for me to lose me in the song--how 'bout Wouldn't It Be Nice, or Don't Worry Baby instead?)
17. Louie Louie (Good fun, but I feel my hand reaching for the dial)
18. You Really Got Me (Louie Louie redux)
19. Heartbreak Hotel (SO not Elvis' best song)
20. Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry's best song next to Memphis, but he's still kind of assey all-around, so thumbs down here)

In general, although I love a song with raw power, I seemed to favor the songs with more thoughtful melodies and words than the get-by-on-a-feeling songs, which tend not to do much for me twenty years on. 1. Like a Rolling Stone (This could actually be the best song ever!) 2. What's Going On? (Still evokes a sad feeling) 3. The Message (A fresh-sounding treat) 4. Strawberry Fields Forever (SO well-written) 5. My Generation (Out of all the "perfect-example-of-rock-attitude" songs on this list, this is the one that still sells the attitude!) 6. A Day in the Life (An exciting journey from start to finish) 7. I Heard It Through the Grapevine (Creates a mood that no other song quite creates) 8. Stairway to Heaven (see #6) 9. Smells Like Teen Spirit (While obviously a product of its time, this doesn't yet feel dated--still a thrilling song) 10. Satisfaction (I'm the world's biggest Stones fan--this is the only song of theirs I'll turn off if I hit it on the radio, yet I gotta give love to the Stones) 11. Respect (Such a good performance) 12. Be My Baby (Not THE big Spector song that should be on this list, but still good) 13. Anarchy in the U.K. (While I still appreciate the Sex Pistols more than like them, this IS their best song, and is quite delicious) 14. Love Will Tear Us Apart (The last of these songs I got to know well--still fresh to me) 15. Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay (Charming, but not my favorite of the artist or genre) 16. Good Vibrations (While I appreciate the production, this has too many diversions for me to lose me in the song--how 'bout Wouldn't It Be Nice, or Don't Worry Baby instead?) 17. Louie Louie (Good fun, but I feel my hand reaching for the dial) 18. You Really Got Me (Louie Louie redux) 19. Heartbreak Hotel (SO not Elvis' best song) 20. Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry's best song next to Memphis, but he's still kind of assey all-around, so thumbs down here)
