Masterpieces:
1. Exile on Main St.
2. Are You Experienced?
3. White Album
4. OK Computer
5. Nevermind
6. Ziggy Stardust
7. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (#6 if you watch Do the Right Thing right after listening)
8. Blonde on Blonde
9. The Dark Side of the Moon (#7 if you play this with the Wizard of Oz!)
10. The Velvet Underground & Nico
11. Sgt. Pepper
12. London Calling
13. What's Going On?
14. Never Mind the Bollocks
15. Highway 61
16. Revolver

Lots of texture and atmosphere, but could use a couple more tight songs in the vein of "The Way Young Lovers Do:"
17. Electric Ladyland
18. Astral Weeks
19. Pet Sounds

3/8ths of this album got me into the top 20:
20. Born to Run

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

I think a lot of the top 20 are overrated, but the only one I don't think is at least a good album is Sex Pistols.

Sex Pistols are a big example today of shock value trumping quality, which is a problem in just about all mediums of art. (It's pretty bad in music and visual art, but it's the absolute worst in comedy.)

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

"Sex Pistols are a big example today of shock value trumping quality"...

Actually, there's a way to correct for that. "Shock value" is very ephemeral; what was shocking in the UK in 1977 is much less so in the US in 2007. If an artist has NOTHING to say except look-at-me-I'm-so-naughty, then the music doesn't hold up. (After all, how many Alice Cooper fans do we have here?) The Pistols' music does hold up, thirty years later. I know not everyone here agrees, but I think Bollocks is a set of brilliant pop songs, performed with exuberant noise and mess. And I don't find it shocking at all.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Because there's like 30 songs on the album, something for everyone to like I guess. Personally I think it's got way too much filler.

Yeah that's what I thought, with all that filler - surely a 12 song or 10 song album is a lot more solid

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Bob Dylan-Blonde on Blonde
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
The Clash - London Calling
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Radiohead - OK Computer
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The Beatles - The Beatles ("The White Album")
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
The Beatles - Revolver
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Nirvana - Nevermind
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols

Although I must say, my ordering of these albums would differ day by day. I've tried far too many times to set a top 100 list in stone, but by the next week, I end up scrapping the list and starting back at square one. Oh well, hopefully I'll at least be able to get my act together for the 90's poll...

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

i don't like "Bollocks" that much
Apart from "Anarchy" and "God saves", 2 briliant rock songs, I think that listening to the whole album bores me : too much noise, and i don't like the way they're throwing up their songs.
I don't dig punk because i guess I prefer construction to destruction.
This "burn the bridges" apporach to music doesn't please me.
even if there are reasons to this album (I recnetly read a very funny review in Rock'n Folk about The song remains the same saying it was probably the worst live album later, and a possible reason why the Sex Pistols entred e recording studio in 1976-77)

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

That's interesting, nicolas...I've always thought of early punk more as deconstruction than destruction--stripping away a decade of increasingly elaborate, and sometimes ponderous, ornamentation, and returning to the musical simplicity of early rock 'n' roll (albeit played loudly and with cartoonish aggressiveness).

In fact, it was the roots-rock echoes of songs by the Ramones, the Clash, and X that got me seriously interested in pre-1960 music (the music for which you're the most consistent advocate here) in the first place.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

I’d have to put myself in the “Bollocks is overrated” camp (and am probably not surprising anyone here with that statement.)

Do I own it? Of course. Do I listen to it? Nope. Like nicolas said, I’m not sure how anyone could listen to that album in one sitting. I think its legacy is, for the most part, the result of originality combined with shock value. But the songs are just not that great.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Midaso , do you know that these songs Karma Police and Paranoid Android was influenced by White Album songs like Sexy Sadie and Happiness is A Warm Gun. Paranoid Android was based on Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Thom Yorke is a big fan of the White Album. Really I found it amusing how people say negative things about the Beatles then they found out the Beatles were a influence on their favorite bands including most of the major alt- rock bands. Remember Tomorrow Never Knows is considered by many the most groudbreaking song for modern music.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

You're continuously confusing groundbreaking and innovation with actual enjoyment of the music, which is a personal thing. You might enjoy The White Album, Midaso doesn't.

Btw, I don't like Radiohead either although I never connected this to the Beatles. Maybe though.. they're the source of all evil!

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

you are right schleuse, it is more deconstruction than destruction, although the Sex Pistols say literally "I wanna destroy"
I was thinking of the Sex pistols when I thought destruction
maybe deconstruction is more accurate
but it was a sort of "tabula rasa" (i don't know if you use that latin expression in English)
I mean the grass took a long time to grow again after them
what you say of the punks going back to the spirit of early rnr is very true and I share this view. I like the Clash very much, for instance, and I don't know about X who's not so popular in France as it is in America.
But 80 % of Nevermind pisses me off, i don't take any pleasure in its listening (except the 2 most popular songs). It's also true for the Ramones : on the first album, i like "Blitzkrieg pop" or "judy is a punk" or "i wanna be your boyfriend", they are built like 50's songs, but the rest doesn't please me that much; it's the sound of the guitars and the drums; same thing with "White blood cells" : it breaks my ears, like we say in French and it just gives me a headache;

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

In the previous post, I meant nevermind the bollocks" and I was not refering to the Nirvana album, which has its share of saturation but that I quite like.

Exactly Neo - at the end of the day it doesn't really matter how innovative something is - it matters how GOOD it is,how much you enjoy it,many things that were innovative in their day sound dated and terrible now...

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

What album in 1966-67 does not sound a little dated.
I have Aftermath, Blonde on Blonde and Fifth Dimension sound so dated compared to something like Taxman. You go play Tomorrow Never Knows to a kid full blasted, they would not know it was the Beatles. I have heard the song on some alternative rock stations. Revolution and Helter Skelter don't really sound dated. I also never understand the dated stuff excuse, something recorded in 1966 is going to sound dated. Ok no big deal, it would like someone trying to convince me why I should like Frank Zappa.
