Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1997
This is the seventh part of the best albums and songs of the 1990s poll, which is described here. You are welcome to list and discuss your favorite albums and/or songs of 1997 in this thread. List(s) need to be posted before the end of August to be included in the calculation of the combined top 10 albums and top 10 songs of 1997. You can include both albums and songs listed at Acclaimed Music and your personal favourites. Songs are sometimes released a year before it appears on an album and the release date can differ between countries. Please have a look at the 1997 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1997 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots. Please include at least 5 albums/songs. The scoring system is as follows for both albums and songs. 1. 50 2. 40 3. 35 4. 30 5. 25 6. 20 7. 18 8. 16 9. 14 10. 12 11. 10 12. 9 13. 8 14. 7 15. 6 16. 5 17. 4 18. 3 19. 2 20. 1 |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1997
OK, a quick question for all of you before I start putting this 1997 one together. First of all, I didn't listen some of Belle and Sebastian's EP songs until I got the Push Barman to Open Old Wounds compilation. I'm guessing I can use the original EP release dates and rank them in the lists for the appropriate year. I'm also a big fan of Beta Band, but I didn't get into them until 1999. I first bought the self-titled full length then the 3Eps compilation, the latter of which I thought was released in the same year as the full length. Was the first Beta Band EP released in the UK in 1997, hence Dry the Rain being ranked in the 1997 year list? Were the second two EPs released in 1998? |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1997
It was a very good year... Albums: 1.Radiohead - OK Computer (obviously) 2.Elliott Smith - Either/Or 3.Portishead - Portishead 4.U2 - Pop 5.Morrissey - Maladjusted (I'd be surprised if anyone else has this as high) I'd be voting for The Verve if 'Urban Hymns' was much shorter. Too much jamming and repitition for me. |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1997
It might be just me, but I was surprised at how thin 1997 was for albums. I guess I just thought the year that OK Computer came out would be rich with full lengths, but I really had to go back to the archives to come up with a small handful. Anyways, Albums: 1. Radiohead - OK Computer 2. Daft Punk - Homework 3. Stereolab - Dots and Loops 4. Smashing Pumpkins - Adore 5. Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen 6. Amon Tobin - Bricolage 7. David Bowie - Earthling 8. American Analog Set - From Our Living Room to Yours |

Hey... does anybody know if all of the songs on the soundtrack to Lost Highway were original songs made for that album? I don't have my collection of old CD inserts handy. I'll try to lay off the obscure music questions for now.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1997
I’m going on vacation tommorow (real vacation : no computer, so I’ll make it quick (quite unusual for me) BRACKET 37 1. The Bee Gees, “Stayin’ Alive” (1977) **** 2. Buddy Holly, “That’ll Be the Day” (1957) *** 3. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax” (1983) *** 4. Chubby Checker, “The Twist” (1960) *** Sorry Buddy, but Stayin’ Alive brings me on the dancefloor everytime I hear it at a party, as it is for Relax, to a lesser extent. The twist is a little bit boring and repetitive (I prefer Twist again) BRACKET 38 1. The Jackson 5, “I Want You Back” (1969) ***** 2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” (1968) ***** 3. The Velvet Underground, “Waiting for the Man” (1967) ***** 4. Chic, “Good Times” (1979) **** Excelllllent bracket! Twice as good as the previous bracket. I had the same dilemna as Anthony for the 2 first, so I put The Jacksons ahead for balance (hope I’ll sleep well tonight), Waiting for the man is a good Lou Reed song, and Chic is funky and danceable (and one of the first sampled songs in history) BRACKET 39 1. Bruce Springsteen, “Thunder Road” (1975) ***** : the first song I ever covered and recorded when I was 16. at that time, I only knew the live version (in the box set Live 1975-85), with only Bruce singing, a piano and his harmonica at the end (in place of the saxophone), stripped of all the instrumentation he added on the album. I still don’t know which version I prefer, for the album one is excellent too. The lyrics about love and escape are fabulous, and the music matches them :the song with this chord progression never looks backwards, there is no verse/chorus. 2. David Bowie, “Heroes” (1977) *** : same subject as Thunder Road, but far from being my favorite Bowie song. 3. Simon and Garfunkel, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1970)*** : disappointed. I acknowledge that Johnny Cash’s cover of that song was (contrary to One) quite unappropriate 4. The Rapture, “House of Jealous Lovers” (2002)** : What happened to critics in 2002 ? As my grandfather would have said, this guy yells as if somebody had stepped on his foot. BRACKET 40 1. The Rolling Stones, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (1965) ***** : Easy win. You don’t tire of that song. Have you noticed the bass line is weird (awkward ?) 2. Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg, “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang” (1993) *** : great music, great funky bass line, but the lyrics are nuthin’ but misogynous shit. 3.“He’s a Rebel” (1962)*** : funny to listen to the 2 rap songs then the innocence of that song... ages ago. Sounds like Abba meeting spector back in ’62. 4. Missy Misdemeanor Elliott, “Work It” (2002) ** *: Same thing for the lyrics, rap girl trying to sound as lewd as the G boys, what a pity...And the production doesn’t make things better. At least, Dre can make a record sound. |

My favorite Spanish song of 1997: 7 Notas 7 Colores' "Con esos ojitos"
Spanish hip hop took a long long time to launch properly, but finally did it with 7 Notas 7 Colores (“7 Notes, 7 Colours”) album “Hecho, es simple” (“Done, It’s Simple”). Of course there were a lot of previous experiences but nearly always were amateurish, imitative or disappointing. But the 7 Notas 7 Colores first album, along with 1998 albums as “Grandes Planes” by El Club de los Poetas Violentos (“Big Plans” by The Violent Poets Club) or “Retorno al principio” de Sólo los Solo (“Return to the Beginning” by Only the Only) supposed the cornerstone of a scene that since then grew considerably, achieving probably its peak with the 2000 album “Lujo Ibérico” by La Mala Rodríguez (“Iberian Luxury” by Bad-Girl Rodríguez) that broke the scene into mainstream. The first single and also the closer song of the album, “Con esos ojitos” (“With Those Eyes”), was probably the best 7N7C offering, with the particular flow and cleverly constructed ego-trip lyrics by MC Mucho Muchacho and the nice instrumental backing courtesy of Dive Dibosso. It goes to show that the sound of the streets is equally valid coming from the New York or the Barcelona suburbs. In Luis Lles words: “From the Barcelona suburbs, 7 Notas 7 Colores made the soundtrack for the life on the border of the hood kids, turning the common people little adventures in stories deserving to be told. Since many rap artists create a fictitious scenario trying to transfer the American reality to everyday Spanish life, it’s surprising the sincerity of the proposal of these boys from El Prat, that resorted to the inventiveness of Hispanic poetry and to a filthy language (but very inspired) for building its rhymes about everything that happened around them, about its yearnings and frustrations, about its desires to escape from a too narrow reality”. CON ESOS OJITOS Composers: Mucho Muchacho/Dive Dibosso Performers: 7 NOTAS 7 COLORES First release: 1996 (“Con esos ojitos / Puercos” CD-single) Length: 3’50” (1997 LP version, I’ve chosen this one if only for removing the silly line “sopla mi verga hasta que se me infle un huevo”, “blow to my cock till an egg gets inflated”). Los cerdos más guarros de barro narran mi historia como la de un Muchacho con garras subterráneo, escurridizo como una mente pachucha de amor por una linda mujer latina en el micrófono. Oh no! Con esos ojitos, tío, con esos ojitos Tío, con esos ojitos, con esos ojitos Tío, con esos ojitos, tío, con esos ojitos, con esos ojitos Tío, con esos ojitos, tío, con esos ojitos, con esos ojitos Tío, con esos ojitos, tío, con esos ojitos WITH THOSE EYES (really hard to translate, impossible to know what Spanish slang word relates better to an English slang word; moreover some parts are meaningless even in the original version) The muddy dirtier pigs Are telling my story As an underground clawed Boy, Slippery as a brain sick of love For a pretty latin woman on the microphone. Oh no! He comes over there, And I’m coming after you And everybody knows who’s going to win, I’m wearing a log look I’m a mother fucker when I nail a new trick, I turn the corners with my afro and my dirty foam, I demolish buildings. God!, my thang’s outstanding and you can’t stop this guy, man, when I come with those eyes. One, two, you can’t sweep away the ones that drink from my jar and the ones from the old drag, sucker, mistake with me, with cosmic force the Boy. With those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes. Your magnificent superhero, baby, not a bird, nor a plane, don’t get wrong, I propel my style, shake it, I bring tasty candy. After the show, always good scores, the things the fresh boys can do, rotting energetic, baby, I’m making those eyes again, those eyes and hitting it. One, two, look, kid, the pigs let down by your kids looking for fire logs, kidnapped by me, raped, my burning rocket. Tell me what are you looking for and you’ll see what you found, my stream never runs aground, I don’t accept notches, asshole, take vitamins if you wanna fuck with me. With those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes. With those eyes that poison everything, tell me how many cocks jumped the fence, you don’t sleep anymore, hey. Listen to the shit I bring, ooh, is a turn, inspire and exhale, shot, breathe, you’re gonna be dead more time than alive, Oh, yes, it’s him, I’m making those eyes again. With those eyes I’m coming slowly, well, pigs, your adventure’s coming to an end cause I’m here to see you with that look in my face and something tells me that the battle’s going to be fierce. Well, well, I was expecting it like that, the mates by my side are willing to finish it, and I’m playful and in your face, bugger, I get to the next level. After, you see, only with slight scratches on my skin, baby, My life’s full of action but don’t worry ‘bout my bones cause I’m making those eyes again. With those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes, with those eyes Man, with those eyes, man, with those eyes. |
