Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1996
Bob Hund regerar (rocks)! They sing in swedish, though. Bergman Rock is the same as Bob Hund. Sings in english, but the songs are weaker..."Bob Hund" means "Bob Dog" and they made a cover of "I Wanna Be Your Dog"...in swedish...på min favoritplats ligger jag nu...I used to see the members of Bob Hund in the subway and on the streets while living in Stockholm...The singer reminds of Neil Young, but the music is not so "traditional". Strong songs and clever lyrics. You can learn swedish for less...the only swedish rock group ever IMO. Henrik will disagree... |

Oh, we also have ... erm ... actually you made me realise that most of my favourite Swedish artists/band are either solo artists or more pop than rock. But at least we have Hives, Soundtrack of Our Lives. And we should never forget Ebba Grön. None of them are as good as bob Hund though. And "Omslag: Martin Kann" is their best album. |

Wow! I just found a site where you can listen to the entire bob Hund catalog and a lot of other things. The most exciting Swedish label 'Silence' have a "Silence Jukebox" on the web! Cult bands like Philemon Arthur & The Dung and Älgarnas Trädgård are there together with Hedningarna and the phone calls from the radio show "Hassan". What a treasure! Do Fred and me a favour and listen to some bob Hund before you post your 1996 lists. http://www.silence.se/jukebox/playlist.asp |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1996
Gracias. |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1996
Otisredding, I'm agree with you, but you have to be down-to-earth. How many people know who is Bob Hund? How many people know who are the Spanish artists that I include in my list? Only the people from Sweden and Spain. Is not useful include them in the same lists. And if I make a list with my favourite Spanish albums is only as a curiosity. (and sorry about my awful English) |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1996
hi guys if you don't mind I can answer pero es mas facil para mi hacerlo en Ingles (ho olvidado espanol) I think the problem you are pointing is far from being only spanish. it's an economical problem : the non-english speaking markets in europe are not big enough for local singers to be famous, unless they sing in English. But I think you do have to include spanish records in your personal lists, because they have to reflect your tastes that would be a wonderful thread : Every one of us giving names of local bands and singers After all, listening to a French, Swedish, Spanish, Italian band es lo mismo que esuchar a un grupo ingles o americano. this way, the lists we would give would be different from one abother. these are really our favorite records of 1996, 1997 .. so I think that to be perfectly relevan they must include everything we prefered that year including non-rock and non anglo saxon material |

My favorite Spanish song of 1996: Morente & Lagartija Nick's "Omega"
Flamenco is an authentic folk style, I mean, they don’t sing “songs” properly. The guitar players (“tocaores”) and hand-clappers (“palmeros”) follow a rhythm and chord pattern that hadn’t changed in centuries (the flamenco “palos”: for example “bulerías” or “soleares”) and the singer (“cantaor”) improvises the melody at the very moment with lyrics coming from popular poetry. So this is a style that in its purity is absolutely stationary. That’s why the innovators are so welcome to revitalize the genre. While the approaches to flamenco from the opposite bank (I mean the rock bands) only occasionally met with artistic success (Smash, Veneno, the last Planetas), the approaches to rock from classic “cantaores” had produced some masterpieces, especially Camarón’s “La leyenda del tiempo” (1979) and Morente’s “Omega” (1996). Enrique Morente is the best example of a “cantaor” unorthodox and innovative since his beginnings, but he released his groundbreaking “Omega” when he was 54 years old, almost thirty years after his first album. So the risks that Morente took for his album were not obviously product of youth impatience. Morente planned to record a whole album from the poem book “Poeta en Nueva York” (“Poet in New York”) of Federico García Lorca, one of the best Spanish poets ever (killed by fascists troops during the Spanish Civil War). Due to the avant-garde nature of the poems the musical approach needed to be bold and uncompromising. So he teamed with Lagartija Nick, an indie rock band from the same city (the wonderful Granada) that had published some albums previously (notably 1992’s “Inercia”). The results of that improbable team broke the boundaries of both genres. I’ve selected from this album the title track that opened the album, a brave 11 minutes-long tour-de-force. Although deeply rooted in flamenco singing and playing the song displays an astonishing range of sounds from Arabian atmospheres to noise bursts. But my favourite moment of the song (from 6’30” to 9’00”) comes when various samples of old “cantaores” fuses creating a sound suggesting the spirit of ancient coming into the soul of Morente that ends screaming “¡¡Las hierbaaas!! (The Graaass!!)” just before the electric explosion. It has been suggested that García Lorca mentioned the grass as a metaphor of Death (as the grass growing around the tombs). Absolutely tremendous. Please download the song, you won’t be disappointed. And one more recommendation: download also the cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (“Aleluya” in Spanish), it could stand proudly beside other famous versions of the song. I would rank them like that: 1º Jeff Buckley’s 2º original Cohen’s 3º John Cale’s 4º Enrique Morente’s 5º Rufus Wainwright’s. I thought that we had to stick to the AM lists... "Albums and songs listed under 1996 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots. So please have a look at the 1996 album and song lists before voting." Did I misunderstand this? |

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1996
I remember the discussion that led to Henrik's warning. You can choose whatever songs and albums you want for each year. Henrik put that up in order to clear up which years each song/album would be associated with. There was some confusion earlier in the poll because some AM singles were released before they were released on albums (Ex: Primal Scream Loaded from 1990 and Primal Scream Loaded on Screamedelica from 1991). Hope I explained that OK. |

Harold, you've got to be the closest thing to a musical brother to me on this site. You're always giving kudos to all the hidden album tracks I like (ex: Novacane). We rank a lot of the same albums pretty high too. Bravo to your tastes! |
