Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1994
This is the fifth part of the best albums and songs of the 1990s poll, which is described here. You are welcome to list and discuss your favorite albums and/or songs of 1994 in this thread. List(s) need to be posted before the end of April to be included in the calculation of the combined top 10 albums and top 10 songs of 1994. Albums and songs listed under 1994 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots. So please have a look at the 1994 album and song lists before voting. Please include at least 5 albums/songs. My favorite Spanish song of 1994: Family's "Nadadora"
Family’s “Un soplo en el corazón” (“A Murmur in the Heart”) was considered by Rockdelux staff the best Spanish album of the 1990s (and the second after Los Planetas 1998’s album by the magazine readers). And “Nadadora” (“Swimmer Girl”) was considered the best Spanish song of the 90s by Rockdelux again. So… is all that critical acclaim justified for such a simple pop song? Well, critics tend to like the unique pieces of art, the works that apparently come out of nowhere leaving its authors dry and unable to surpass or even equal its masterpiece. Think about, by example, Mary Margaret O’Hara’s “Miss America” or My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless” and you’ll get the picture. The first and last album of Family is filled of perfect pop songs, brief but long enough, simple but deep enough, beautiful but bittersweet enough. And after this little big album Family never released anything, being Javier Aramburu devoted till then to design album covers (probably the best Spanish cover designer ever, just see http://rateyourmusic.com/list/germannnn/javier_aramburu). Bet let the critics rave about the album: “Brave love songs that break every stereotype, with a strange ability to create melodies that captivates you forever” (Ricardo Aldarondo). “Every song is a poem with a great power of evocation, and ends soon: when it’s said all that must be said the music stops, adding nothing more; the briefness and concision used as the better weapons” (Esteve Farrés). And about the song: “Like the cat people, he silently slides around the swimming-pool unable to hide his love. There she lies, the adored swimming girl, and something arise there: the secret, the intuition, the discretion, the most important silently told” (Ricardo Aldarondo) “The triumph of the simplicity: electronic pop with spare resources but touched by the magic wand of the inspiration. Three minutes of perfection, of blinding melody and crafted arrangements. A flood of emotions” (Javier Blánquez). He uses to show up when she’s swimming. His intentions are as clear as the water. Today he will come again, his hair just combed, He will cross in front of her unable to hide his love She uses to rest with her feet in the water She’s got the blue heart of a swimmer She will come back with her quince-coloured skin Bordering in balance the swimming pool for love Today he will come again, his hair just combed, He will cross in front of her unable to hide Unable to hide his love |
