This is one part of the best albums and songs of the 90's poll, which is described here.

You are welcome to list and discuss your favorite albums and/or songs of 1990 in this thread. List(s) need to be posted before the end of January to be included in the calculation of the combined top 10 albums and top 10 songs of 1990.

The scoring is as follows. Please include at least 5 albums/songs.

I like the idea a lot, but wish we weren't starting with the 90s. I find that decade pretty musically bereft.

I only own one album from 1990, "bellybutton" by Jellyfish, so I can't participate...

1990's a tough year to find good music, but I'm sure 1991 will be even more difficult because that was the year that sorts of great stuff was released.

I could only come up with 5 albums I've heard from 1990 that deserve points:

1. Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual
2. Flaming Lips - In a Priest Driven Ambulance
3. Sonic Youth - Goo
4. Fugazi - Repeater
5. Phish - Lawn Boy

thanks to acclaimedmusic's lists I was reminded of some more 1990 songs to work with. I'll have to think about that list a little more. Thanks for starting this Henrik!

I'll post a songs list soon but first, I was thinking, weren't The La's "There She Goes", Electronic "Getting Away With It", N.W.A. "Express Yourself" and maybe a couple of others released as singles before 1990? I might be wrong, I'm not sure. Great idea Henrik!

"There She Goes" is definitely pre-'90 and "Getting Away with It"is December '89 iirc. So take them off my list then. Probably NWA as well.

Shouldn't we use Acclaimed Music's year lists as a guide in case there is any confusion over what year is associated with each song/album? That's what I'm doing, since I'm not old enough to know if singles were released before albums from 1989-91. It looks like that was the case with Soon and a couple Primal Scream tracks. And There She Goes was listed as 1990. Could it have been released in 1989 and only gained real exposure the year after?

"There She Goes" was first released in 1988 and then re-released as a new version in 1990. Thus, I should probably move the song to the 1988 list at AM.

The correct thing would be to do the same in this forum poll. But since it's currently listed at 1990 at AM and many of you have already included the song in your lists, maybe we should keep it eligible for this poll?

Please give me a few quick opinions on this and I'll make a decision tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The new version is the one most known and loved, and the album came out in 1990, and the song made it's biggest impact that year, plus, FAR too many people have already put "There She Goes" on their singles lists, let's just leave it in 1990 so we don't make things too complicated

I would place "There She Goes" in 1991. That is when it charted here in America. My song rankings are all based on when the song charted in America (or failing that when it charted in England, or failing that when it first appeared as a single/album track).

In the end, I am not sure it matters. If I have, say, U2's "One" in 1992 and others have it in 1991, Henrik could just assign all the votes and point tallies for the song to the year of his choice (based on the methodology he prefers). As long as my vote is counted, the question of towards what year is irrelevant to me.

here is my list (1990 was not so good as 1989 and 1991). That was Heavy metal year, like 1986:

1. Pixies - Bossanova (by my opinion their best album!!!)
2. Judas Pries - Painkiller (although critics claim their older works, I like this the most! Heavy metal Thunder!)
3. Depeche Mode - Violator (this band was never album band, but I like this one)
4. Megadeth - Rust In Peace
5. Slayer - Season In Abyes (nice work again, to extreme limits)
6. Black Crowes - Shake Your Moneymaker

Contrary to other statements above, 1990 was one of the few good years for singles in the early 90's right before the major genres evaporated in search of new directions. While it contained only a few all-time classics, on the whole each single above is a little gem. When we look at the next few years you'll see what I mean.
