Well, probably a list of the best albums of the 70s made today by the actual staff (and with 25 years of historical perspective) would be quite different. In fact, the following albums appeared in the all time Top 200 published in 2002 and not in this 1988 list:
13. CURTIS MAYFIELD “Curtis” (Curtom, 1970).
31. JONI MITCHELL “Blue” (Reprise, 1971).
36. THE WAILERS “Catch A Fire” (Tuff Gong, 1973).

85. PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. “Metal Box” (Virgin, 1979).
86. TIM BUCKLEY “Starsailor” (Straight, 1970).
89. HANK WILLIAMS “40 Greatest Hits” (MGM, 1978).
111. SERGE GAINSBOURG “Histoire de Melody Nelson” (Philips, 1971).
119. STEVE REICH “Music For 18 Musicians” (ECM, 1978).
120. ROXY MUSIC “For Your Pleasure” (EG, 1973).
122. NEU! “Neu!” (Brain, 1972).
125. SUN RA “Space Is The Place” (Blue Thumb, 1973).
137. JACQUES BREL “Brel” (Barclay, 1977).
142. T. REX “The Slider” (T. Rex Wax, 1972).
145. THE POP GROUP “Y” (Radarscope, 1979).
153. FANIA ALL STARS “Live At The Cheetah” “Live At The Cheetah Vol 2” (Fania, 1971 / 1973).
179. THE WHO “Who’s Next” (Polydor, 1971).
184. GRATEFUL DEAD “American Beauty” (Warner Bros., 1970).
191. BUZZCOCKS “Singles Going Steady” (IRS, 1979).
199. THE JAM “All Mod Cons” (Polydor, 1978).

But there’s some great albums not widely recognized like the ones by King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill or Kevin Ayers.

Re: Rockdelux Best Albums of the 70s

No wonder they couldn't separate these two brilliant number ones! Overall, I am fascinated by the RDL lists in that they manage to get their lists so much more varied than those from most other magazines, and still, if you look closer, they take a clear standpoint here and there (very little heavy metal and grunge as an example). And then of course, they have their habit of always leaving some major artists outside. No Pink Floyd, Al Green or Steely Dan this time.

Thanks again, Honorio!

No "Tapestry"...

on either list. Blasphemy!

Re: Rockdelux Best Albums of the 70s

If they don't include Pink Floyd is 'cause they don't like them at all except for the Syd Barrett period. Dark side of the moon is a horrible album for most of the writers of Rockdelux (which I agree to some extent: don't think it's horrible but terribly boring). For instance, they included All is dream by Mercury Rev in the worst-of-year end lists and that album was compared to Dark side of the moon.

From what I've read, they like Al Green and Steely Dan but I guess not everybody can be on the list.

Re: Rockdelux Best Albums of the 70s

I can't believe they picked "Islands". If they wanted to have a King Crimson album on the list they should have picked "Red" or "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" (which both rank among the decade's finest releases) or even "In the Wake of Poseidon", but "Islands"? It's one of the worst albums in the KC discography.

Re: Rockdelux Best Albums of the 70s

Jacek, I had to agree with you. Both albums, especially "Red" would be a better choice. But this doesn't make "Islands" a bad album. From the mellow and dreamy "Islands" to the cathartic "Sailor's Tale", from the Beatlesque rocker "Ladies of the Road" to the Mozartesque classical "Song of the Gulls", "Islands" proves that even a mediocre Crimson album is still a good album. But my favourite song of the album (despite an uninspired Boz Burrell vocal performance) is "The Letters", reflecting brilliantly the sadness, anger, desperation and surrender after the discovering of an infidelity.
By the way, Jacek, I'm working hardly in my top 100 (a really difficult task)

Re: Rockdelux Best Albums of the 70s

Actually I haven't listened to "Islands" for ages now, but as far as I remember the only songs I liked were "Song of the Gulls" and the title track. The other ones were dull. They all suffered from the Moonchild syndrome i.e. lots of mellow, "atmospheric" sound collages that don't go anywhere.
