Re: The Courier-Mail (Brisbane): Fifty Years of Rock'n'Roll

Helsingin Sanomat, Finland's leading newspaper, did this last year. They chose one album (or, in some cases, single) for each year. (They also chose three other albums for each year which they mentioned but didn't feature.)

Re: The Courier-Mail (Brisbane): Fifty Years of Rock'n'Roll

I tend to agree with the Finnish newspaper regarding the birth date of rock & roll. The correct 50th anniversary is not now in 2005, but was last year. Five decades on from the time when Elvis stepped into Sun Studios in 1954 to record "That's All Right" might have been a more appropriate birthday, if we had to have one. The exact date, of course, is open to debate.

Anyway, Brisbane's Courier-Mail has published yet another list in its 50 Years of Rock series:

20 CLASSIC ALBUMS NO-ONE BOUGHT AT THE TIME

Dustbowl Ballads - Woody Guthrie (1964)
Moby Grape - Moby Grape (1967)
Oar - Skip Spence (1969)
4 - Scott Walker (1969)
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)
Hunky Dory - David Bowie (1971)
Little Feat - Little Feat (1971)
Tago Mago - Can (1971)
Closing Time - Tom Waits (1973)
Pink Moon - Nick Drake (1974)
On the Beach - Neil Young (1974)
No Other - Gene Clark (1974)
The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers (1976)
Pacific Ocean Blue - Dennis Wilson (1977)
Sister Lovers - Big Star (1978)
Send Me a Lullabye - The Go-Betweens (1982)
The Violent Femmes - The Violent Femmes (1983)
Saint Julian - Julian Cope (1991)
Harmacy - Sebadoh (1996)
Zaireeka - The Flaming Lips (1997)

Again, nice to see the Go-Betweens in there, with one of their more obscure albums!

Re: The Courier-Mail (Brisbane): Fifty Years of Rock'n'Roll

Lawrence,

Thanks for posting all these lists. At least some of them can be included, see below.

10 CLASSIC SONGS THE '50s (in no ranked order)
No problem.

15 BEST SONGS WRITTEN BY JERRY LEIBER AND MIKE STOLLER (AND THE ARTISTS WHO HAD HITS WITH THEM)
This is more difficult. I need to know all other songs written by Leiber and Stoller.

CLASSIC LENNON & McCARTNEY SONGS
I know the Lennon & McCartney catalogue, so this is fine. However, was "classic" meant as "the best"?

ESSENTIAL BRIAN WILSON SONGS
See Leiber and Stoller.

GREAT SONGS BASED ON REAL EVENTS
I will not include this list, as it is impossible to define the 'real events' category.

10 CLASSIC TUNES WITH A STRONG AUSTRALIAN FLAVOUR
I will include this list if it roughly can be translated to "the best Australian songs".

20 CLASSIC ALBUMS NO-ONE BOUGHT AT THE TIME
I have actually included similar lists before (The Wire etc.) as it "gives support to albums that haven't always been supported".

Stefu,
The Helsingin Sanomat list is already included.

Re: The Courier-Mail (Brisbane): Fifty Years of Rock'n'Roll

Henrik,

I think your judgement on these lists is sound. From looking at the lists and accompanying articles, it can be readily deduced that those featuring the Lennon/McCartney and Australian songs are indeed "best of" lists and should be included.

I'll continue to post any further lists published in the Courier-Mail series, and even if they can't be added, they're at least worth having a read of.

(And, that first list should be titled 10 Classic Songs OF the '50s.)

Re: The Courier-Mail (Brisbane): Fifty Years of Rock'n'Roll

The list "20 Classic Albums That No One Bought At The Time" is a bit problematic. "On The Beach" actually reached #16 on Billboard, and "Violent Femmes" was a big seller, most notably in Australia - their later album "ROCK!!!" was actually available overseas ONLY as an AUSTRALIAN IMPORT because of the Femmes' popularity in Australia.

As for the list, Joe S. Harrington and David Keenan would certainly question some of it, and the brilliant amatuer "janitor-x" could refute many arguments about them.

Still, if they feel that way and could refute criticisms of writers like "janitor-x", I would be pleased to see it.
