Rockdelux Best 150 Songs of the XX Century
On March 1998 Rockdelux released its number 150, and they published a list with the best 150 songs of the XX Century (“Las 150 mejores canciones del siglo XX”). This is, in my opinion, the best list coming from Rockdelux (and one of the best that I have read). It includes, of course, the usual suspects (“What’s Going On”, “Like a Rolling Stone”), but also unfolds a wide range of musical styles, from jazz to soundtracks, from blues to disco music, and even some classical. It selects only a song of each artist, but the selections are quiet adequate (in my opinion again), being maybe “Riders of the Storm” the best song by The Doors, “Strawberry Fields Forever” the best from the Beatles, “Walk on the Wild Side”, “Sympathy for the Devil”, “Heroes”, etc. And it offers what a good list should offer: good songs. “Moon River”, “Walk On By”, “Strange Fruit” or “Over The Rainbow” are great songs independently of the style. I’ve added (between brackets) the country and style of the songs in Hispanic tongues. 1. “What’s Going On” MARVIN GAYE, 1971. 2. “Moon River” HENRY MANCINI, 1961. 3. “Like A Rolling Stone” BOB DYLAN, 1965. 4. “Fight The Power” PUBLIC ENEMY, 1989. 5. “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine” JAMES BROWN, 1970. 6. “I Say A Little Prayer” ARETHA FRANKLIN, 1968. 7. “Adagio For Strings” SAMUEL BARBER, 1938. 8. “All Tomorrow’s Parties” THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO, 1967. 9. “Je t’aime moi non plus” SERGE GAINSBOURG & JANE BIRKIN, 1969. 10. “Marquee Moon” TELEVISION, 1977. 11. “Walk On By” DIONNE WARWICK, 1964. 12. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” JOY DIVISION, 1980. 13. “A Love Supreme (Part 1: Acknowledgement)” JOHN COLTRANE, 1965. 14. “Strings Of Life” RHYTHIM IS RHYTHIM, 1987. 15. “The Girl From Ipanema” STAN GETZ & JOAO GILBERTO, 1963. 16. “Strange Fruit” BILLIE HOLIDAY, 1939. 17. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” OTIS REDDING, 1968. 18. “Anarchy In The UK” SEX PISTOLS, 1976. 19. “Moritat” LOTTE LENYA, 1955. 20. “Sympathy For The Devil” THE ROLLING STONES, 1968. 21. “The Model” KRAFTWERK, 1978. 22. “Walk On The Wild Side” LOU REED, 1972. 23. “Riders On The Storm” THE DOORS, 1971. 24. “Born To Run” BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, 1975. 25. “Dancing Queen” ABBA, 1976. 26. “Famous Blue Raincoat” LEONARD COHEN, 1971. 27. “Good Vibrations” THE BEACH BOYS, 1966. 28. “O Supermen (For Massenet)” LAURIE ANDERSON, 1981. 29. “La vie en rose” EDITH PIAF, 1946. 30. “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” SYLVESTER, 1978. 31. “Ne me quitte pas” JACQUES BREL, 1959. 32. “My Girl” THE TEMPTATIONS, 1965. 33. “Puro teatro” LA LUPE, 1969. Indeed!
Nice variety there. Much thanks. And how different for the Beatles not to be a dominant force- I only see 1 entry, and it's all the way down at 38! |

They have Marquee Moon at 10! That's cool. And there's the James Bond theme on the list, too, that's even cooler. I love James Bond. |
