Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

0. Brian Wilson "Smile"

1. Dungen - "Ta Det Lugnt"
2. Of Montreal - "Satanic Panic in the Attic"
3. William Basinski - "Disintegration Loops I-IV"
4. Junior Boys "Last Exit"
5. Fiery Furnaces "Blueberry Boat"
6. Les Savvy Sav "Inches"
7. Go! Team "Thunder, Lightning, Strike"
8. Department of Eagles "The Whitey on the Moon UK LP"
9. Modest Mouse "Good News for People Who Love Bad
News"
10. Solex "The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock"

Note #1: Brian Wilson's "Smile" is given an honorary mention (it appears at number 0), but is not part of the list, the reason given is that it belongs to a different era and cannot be compared with contemporary records

Note #2: The albums by William Basinski and Department of Eagles were both released in 2003. The authors explain they couldn't include them in their list of best albums from that year because they didn't get their copies in time, so they decided to put them on this year's list instead.

Re: Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

It's a Polish webzine that deals with alternative music, something like Pitchfork and very Pitchfork-inspired. As far as I know it's a non-profit project, as there aren't any advertisements on the site, but they do get occasional promo copies of records from the music companies and have a regular staff. I don't know if they qualify as "professional critics", but they are the only indie-oriented site/magazine in Poland and they are quite popular and influential among fans of this kind of music (not that there's a lot of them). You can take a look at their site:

And if you like there are also lists for 2001, 2002 and 2003:

Re: Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

Looks good indeed.

A voice inside me says that someone wrote me an email about Porcy (at least it was a Polish webzine). I apologize to the person who wrote to me (you, Jacek?) as I haven't included the webzine yet.

Re: Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

Yeah, I sent you some lists from Porcys a while ago. I really don't Porcys, by the way, the people who run it are even more conceited and pretentious than those at Pitchfork. Why is it that critics at those indie-oriented sites are always a bunch of snobs?

It's cool to see Blur's Think Tank at #7 on their 2003 list and also Trail of Dead's Source Tags and Codes at #1 on their 2002 list.

Re: Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

grek,

Cool to have a real critic writing in this forum!

Maybe you can say something about Dungen as you listed "Ta det lugnt" as the album of 2004? I heard a song from his second last album "Stadsvandringar" a couple of years ago on Swedish television, and it was glorious psychedelia! However, for some reason the Swedish critics seem not to care much about him and I forgot about him. Then I was really surprised to see "Ta det lugnt" rated high at metacritic.com, and I'll probably buy "Ta det lugnt" very soon. I just need some extra push from you.

Keep up the great work!

Re: Porcys 10 best albums of 2004

hello henrik :>
a real critic... hm, not realy. i dont consider myself as a critic, more as a music lover :>

about dungen: it's all about great hooks (melodies), amazing harmonies, and a variety of different styles i'd say. a combination of: progressive rock, pop, psychodelia, even jazz sometimes... but dont expect me to analyse it. it's kind a hard for me as a young and raw "critic" :>
