Re: BEST magazine

Olivier,
Thanks again for your contributions!

The Joshua Tree and Brothers in Arms are two albums "music snobs" love to hate. It would be interesting to know what you all think of this list. Let's have a discussion!

Re: BEST magazine

It's an interesting list, although the ordering of albums by certain artists leaves me a bit puzzled.

Why is 1999 so low? That's my favorite album of all time, in case I hadn't already made it painfully obvious.

Revenge above Sweet Dreams for Eurythmics? No Touch? No Be Yourself Tonight? No 1984?

Let's Dance and no Scary Monsters for Bowie?

Pornography ahead of Disintegration?

I like that a lot of these albums are included, and overall it is a good list, but the orderings just leave me a little puzzled. Here is how I would rank the 80s albums in terms of greatness (not favoritism) by the artists I listed:

Prince

1. 1999
2. Sign o' the Times
3. Purple Rain
4. Lovesexy
5. Dirty Mind
6. Parade
7. Controversy
8. Around the World in a Day
9. Batman

The Cure:

1. Disintegration
2. Seventeen Seconds
3. The Head on the Door
4. Pornography
5. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
6. Faith
7. The Top
8. Japanese Whispers (although I adore it)

Eurythmics:

1. Sweet Dreams
2. Touch
3. 1984
4. In the Garden
5. Be Yourself Tonight
6. Revenge
7. Savage
8. We Too Are One

Bowie:

1. Scary Monsters
2. Let's Dance
3. Tonight
4. Never Let Me Down (awful!)

Re: BEST magazine

Just noticed Scary Monsters is indeed in the list.

Also, Like a Virgin is Madonna's WORST album of the 80s.

Re: BEST magazine

I certainly love hating The Joshua Tree and Brothers in Arms. I liked early U2 before Bono became all self-righteous. That's when I started liking Adam more. I also enjoyed Achtung, Baby.

A I don't think I saw anything by R.E.M. or The Smiths. I hope I'm mistaken.

LIke a Virgin...

The album is good, fun pop (and contains two of the defining singles of the decade), but, yah, it certainly doesn't deserve citation over Like a Prayer, M's greatest studio album (along with Ray of Light).

Re: BEST magazine

I think The Joshua Tree is ok, but definitely not one of the best albums of the 80s. On the whole, this seems like a list from someone who's very nostalgic to the 80s but wasn't really listening to the innovative music at the time. In today's terms, the top albums would be more like OutKast and Coldplay than Radiohead or Wilco.
