Message:   What is art is a question never fully answered. I think tattoos as body art are really art. If art is a personal expression of deep felt experiences or beliefs, then most tattoos would easily qualify as "art."

Do the denizens of Nike who brand themselves with the trademark Nike Swoosh qualify? That's a stretch as the ink is more a mark of a cult than an artistic expression. I've watched a couple of episodes of the cable show, LA Ink and have been fascinated by the people who populate it. Moreover, I've come to realize how significant the tats of most its clientele are. Many participate in the designs being inked on their bodies. They modify their bodies to remind them of something or someone important. I suppose it's the modern day extension of the ubiquitious sailor tat that says "Mother."

Me, I'm pretty enough as is and will keep my body in a state of canvas purity like some Cy Twombly pasty white on white painting.
