Hi everyone, I think this forum is great since I know not one person who grows guppies.
I have had a 55 gallon tank for years, but never had guppies. A couple of friends gave me a bunch of mongrils from their tank recently and they are now breeding in mine.
I went out in haste and got two 1 gallon tanks for the mothers to have their fry, and a couple weeks ago one did, and last week, I had another batch of babies.
I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about guppies and I seem to be doing everything wrong (except frequent water changes and live baby brine shrimp). Fortunately, I haven't lost any babies.
The PH is higher than 7.6 in the one gallons and I can't seem to get it down, even though I do water changes with Reverse Osmosis water with a PH of 6.8 - but I have a feeling once the biofilter bacteria kick in, the water will balance out better. I have been using PH DOWN, but the next day it is the same as it ever has been. I have been adding two drops of it every night. The fish don't seem to be suffering, though.
At first I culled the small of the drop, last week I culled the smallest 8, this weekend I culled 4 more. I put them in the community tank...some made it, some became snacks two seconds after going in.
When can I start to tell the males from the females? I have one fish about 2 or 3 weeks old that looks like she has a gravid spot. |
